  • This whole topic has interested me! As a video editor myself, I identify with this as I started researching this topic. There are some workarounds…but agree, would be very nice to add this to all adobe programs!

June 12, 2017 at 9:27 pm in reply to: C100 and LCD Monitor Trouble

Hi, I’m having a similar problem in that my C100 mkii (original firmware) only shows up on an external computer monitor in SD resolution / 720×480 (as confirmed by the monitor’s input info/status). I’ve checked the output in the menu of the C100 several times and referred to the manual.

Anybody have a suggestion on enabling output to full 1920×1080?

  • RoRK,
The codec I am rendering to is MainConcept H.264. This is a good point you bring up. It’s likely, I don’t have enough ram, (have only 8GB) and thus the other cores don’t become enabled, even though I have ‘ Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing’ As I was reading here

    Thank you!
    Richard

  • Dave,
Thanks. That is an option…But even working on 10 seconds of footage was painfully slow…I did click on the + in the ‘tracking point’ box and was able to get it out of the analyze mode. (don’t know if it was a coincidence or what though)
Strange, but I have now tried it on other clips and now it goes much faster.
    Thanks again!

August 16, 2011 at 6:36 pm in reply to: Mixing DSLR with Vixia HD footage?

    Hello Gerry,
I’ve struggled with similar challenges, so here is what I would suggest.

You didn’t say if you’re using a Juiced Link, H4n, etc. But,in a interview environment, with a producer present, etc, it can be a bit stressful messing with something like an H4n feeding a VIXIA where you are stumbling through menus, more connections etc–compared to dedicated XLR inputs such as those found on a DVX-100 or AG-HMC40 where you can just dial in the levels–immediately. I feed my VIXIA w/an H4N and am now looking at the AG-HMC40 for this exact reason (because I hate the extra connections/hassle/stress/more setup time.)

I purchased a VIXIA solely because my 7D was not appropriate to shot 20minute+ interviews without filling tons of disc space–so I loved the fact that the VIXIA shoots at 24Mbps which is fine for interviews–if not ideal, but again hate dealing with menus to do everything

If you just need a 2nd camera to get the ‘wide angle’ shot for example, why don’t you just go with a cheap $300 VIXIA (non ‘s’ models are cheap on ebay ~$200-$300) And get the T3i model when you can afford it? And avoid Larger files/sync issues/audio input issues Heck, the idea of a interview is to focus on the emotion/content of the speaker…getting to preoccupied in the technical is exactly why I am, again, looking into a HMC40 (also b/c nothing goes as planned and in a true ‘live’ environment such as events, that goes even more so)

The T3i would be a very wise decision IF you are using it to mostly shoot b-roll. Because the creative possibilities are so much more than another VIXIA… The DOF with even the 50mm cheap lens is just amazing, and will inter-cut just fine with your VIXIA footage (especially if you are shooting at the high bit rate) Also, I have put my Vixia on my Konova slider and found, yes the footage looked good, but without that beautiful DOF the shot was not nearly as beautiful as the same shot taken by my 7D. Hope this helps.

  • Scott, Thanks for the info on the Canon T2i. Looks like a great alternative to the 7D. If I could do it over, I’d consider purchasing a T2i instead of the 7D because it would be fine for those primarily using it for video…

  • [Gary Hazen] “I think you could syncc three(or more) 210 units together with the addition of a hub.”

Gary, that’s amazing! I just called brightsign and someone in sales said that since I am just playing looped video, I would NOT need a controller! Awesome not to need a pc for a tradeshow playback system.

    Thanks so much again, Gary,
    Richard

  • Hello Walter,
Thank you so much for your input.

[Walter Soyka] “I agree with Gary — an NLE offline followed by an AE online will be a huge timesaver. I’m a FCP guy, too, but I’d think the Mercury Playback Engine in Premiere Pro CS5 would be perfect for multi-screen editorial.”

Agreed. You echoing Gary’s comment helped me ‘understand’…to do an ‘editorial’ will nail things down tremendously. And I’ll be able to output the audio track right from PPro.

[Walter Soyka] “I think that the hardest part of your project is going to be making the cameras’ perspectives match the displays as you intend. I’d budget time for testing.”

I can’t tell you how appreciative I am for flagging me on this! This now intuitively strikes me as a glaring point I overlooked…

Okay, that being said, I really only am concerned about the cameras. I researched 3 ‘toy’ cameras and found the Kodak Zi8 (SD card/various framerates/sizes/ext mic) But it records in the Kodak Zi8 ‘.3ivx’ format which sounds like a major hassle converting. I’m starting to think about buying 2 more EOS 7d’s, sure it would be $2800 (2 body’s and a 55mm lens for each)but I could sell 1 of them on ebay afterwards when production wraps, and maybe keep the other as a backup/2nd camera if I can afford.
Or any other modest camera ideas? I was thinking about a LUMIX as some of the models have inter-frame compression (easier to edit) as I don’t need state of the art HD.

Thank you so much for your help Gary and Walter–I very grateful for your help!

  • Hello Gary,
Thanks for the input! I’d love to know your experience with the Brightsign 210’s. Especially sync’d.

Interesting thought about working in the NLE first. I never thought of it that way… Knowing how Premiere Pro is…I’d still probably prefer, for creative flexibility to just stick in AE and really make the most of draft mode/ shrinking down the size. I guess you could make a custom project (720 x 3840 or so) in PPro though…I may have to try that.
    Thanks
    Richard

March 4, 2010 at 5:52 pm in reply to: Canon EOS 7D Editing

    Marc,
From what I have heard, mpeg streamclip ‘works’ but your footage takes a quality hit. I have done this workaround for the time being. (Maybe you can do something similar on your mac?) I import all my 7D clips into an ‘XC Cam’ project ( I am on a PC and use CS3) then render the whole timeline. Then I go to the ‘preview files’ folder–pull all those out and drop them into my project. Premiere Pro sees the ‘preview files’ all as native XD Cam files and I can apply instances of them infinitely without as much rendering because PPro was designed to work with XDcam codec!

For the mac, I am not sure…maybe somebody else can respond?? for older systems…a good product to look into is: NEO HD for $500. It addresses the ‘mathmatical coding’ that is such a strain on most current editing systems. But I wouldn’t puchase Neo HD if you are going to do a big upgrade soon, as that function may be improved in the latest (or soon upcoming) mac releases. Again, maybe a mac expert can reply : )

For my own 7D editing, I didn’t have HD the work to justify the expense, (especially considering I can do short edits with the workaround described above) so I will just wait till I build my windows 7 machine when CS5 comes out, hopefully later this year.
