I also had this file naming problem once and suddenly for no apperent reason. And I couldn’t
figure out what it was and ever since I change the index (x245_000 to y245_000) whenever I change cards. (offcourse sometimes I forget to do this, but thusfar I was lucky enough to never get this duplication disaster again)

if you wanna be right the first time around
buy a mac pro (the cheapest will do), add a drive and final cut.
if you want to use your decklink card , the most expensive part of your system (whatever it is) will probably be your reference monitor. (maybe one of the most expensive parts)

I’am afraid there is not much you can do.
This problem (memory leakages) was partly solved in version 5.
But even in FCP 6.0.4 you run into this kind of problems when editing xdcam or other interframe compressed footage, (after approx .7 hours editing)
even on a octo-core with plenty ram.

Just save and restart and get to work again.
Offcorse checking your disks with diskwarrior is always a good idea

that’s right
you might be able to edit three streams at a time, but four would be pushing it,
5 seems impossible with a 2 core chip. (unless they change their code)

You can edit with your Mac Book Pro, no problem

but it’s not likely that any core2 chip can decompress 5 hd-mpeg streams at once, i’am not even sure if it could do 5 stream of prores at once.

So the answer might be, no. what you want should be done with a serious mac-pro system, mighty fine drives and some serious monitors.

However you can make a good rough cut with your gear.

To avoid automatic rendering you have 2 options.
1. keep editing
2. change the auto render option finalcutpro/user prefs/general => right bottom corner (i think)

for straight editing with limited diskspace stay in the native resolution for as long as your processors can keep up.

Well, I did some minor tests and after examining the shots (3), I see your point. Not that I get this horrible results as you got. – maybe that’s because of a different background color, light, etc-
But I have to admit that most shots (even older one’s I was perfectly happy with) are a tad noisy.
-what does it say about my professionalism ?

The ex + the ex codec might not be the best couple to use when you want to key your shots and maybe only usable after a lot of tweaking. Good for me I only make documentaries (and family films)

-but I have say your shots looked extra extra bad, i don’t know why

The guy has a problem and we could help him (and our selfs) more or better by asking questions than by being judgemental.

On the other end, this computer of him must be pretty powerful when it’s able to change a whole reel into something else without a sweat

Well okay good
But these standards they invented to justify their investments, if or when a “Blair Witch Project” or anything worth while shot on hdv comes along they will show it on the HD channel whenever it looks HDish and people swallow it. (even in England)
So relax and make the best program you can with the equipment you have.

Nonetheless it’s still better to shoot on the best possible format you can afford.

P.S. I can tell you stories about U-matic scans of 35mm films copied to 1 inch norm “c (required) and broadcasted.
