I have been using Vegas since 2002! Yes, you read that correctly. Since it was Sonic Foundry. Then Sony. Now Magix. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve done everything from news segments to music videos, corporates, green screens, film school edits, church videos, and now in-house video dude.
In January 2018 I made the decision to do a pretty intense project solely in Premiere. I can tell you when you are trying to decide, here’s the deciding factor: If you are simply editing a narrative with some selling points and music, go Vegas all the way. You do all kinds of basic enhancers for your video. I use digital juice dot com. I also use Photoshop a lot with Vegas and mattes.
If you’re editing with special effects and integrating with motion tracking, you gotta use Premiere. It’s visual effects will surpass Vegas. You can hone in on specific colors with precision and that’s where Vegas draws the line. The trade-off with Premiere is everything will take you twice as long compared to Vegas. I use two hands when editing in Vegas; one on the mouse and the other on the keyboard. I use my trusty Logitech gaming mouse with programmed buttons specific to Vegas. I can move super fast. I can edit as the video is playing and I love that part.
But when it comes to art, I have to use Premiere. Commit yourself to one project and see the difference on the other side. For me, I use both but Vegas is my everyday driver.
