I would also like to add that you consider taking a pocket voice recorder similar to a Lanier or RadioShack unit.
I have been doing this for many years and it really helps when the vendors give you a contact name and telephone number, you can have them talk directly into the recorder. Believe me when I tell you that your head will be swimming with model numbers and rumors. The voice recorder helps to keep it all together.
I also found this to be great when it comes to expense reports. How much was the Taxi and how much I spent for lunch and where.
A small digital camera also helps.

All of the DVCPro tapes, DVCPro100, DVCPro50, and DVCPro25, use the same formula, the color of the jacket is a reference for the different loads or run time.
[Otis F] “Now I thought the Varicam shot a HD format like Sony’s Cinealta, and that DVCPro HD was the next step down, sitting somewhere between Full HD and HDV. Or am I right but the Varicam uses the same tape format? “
The Varicam is DVCPro100 or sometimes called DVCProHD. It uses the same tape stock that the DVCPro50 and DVCPro25 uses, but it is recorded at 100mbps, four times faster than the DVCPro25 which is 25mbps. Simple math.
[Otis F] “If I am wrong then presumably I can use a DVCPro HD deck with Firewire to capture it straight into FCP HD, without mega fast drives?”
The current deck of choice is the Panasonic 1200A with the firewire IO. This deck will play back all of the DVCPro formats including the DVCPro100 or HD. When tied to the FCP via firewire, the file sizes are typically 12-15mbps in HD.

The FCP-HD will need the FRC, Frame Rate Converter, plug-in for the FCP in order to work with any off speed frame rates.
