  • Thanks David,
I can see we need to discuss endeavouring to remember to switch back either Channel 1 or 2 back to the Camera Mic after using a 2 mic interview setup.
    Cheers,

  • David I may not be very good at endeavouring to simply explain a complex problem.

I work in the world of daily news and current affairs and operate as cameraman/lightingman/soundman/editor, whereby one has to complete a field edit quickly after having shot the original material the same day and to deliver usually a compressed file via an ftp programe to get to air in the daily 6pm newscast.

One might record over 100 clips which the reporter has not had time to view til after the ingest from the SxS Card – via the Sony XD Cam Browser application.

Quickly dumping these clips down to the timeline, and then dragging that sequence across to the Viewer makes for rapid viewing of the field footage, compared to having to navigate in the browser thru what could be over 100 camera clips to view the field footage is a very slow alternative to zipping thru a “Raw Footage” sequence in the Viewer.

From this the reporter either notes time codes of the required shots for then editing down to a new sequence say called the Master Cut Track. If time permits the reporter may insert the required “Grabs” to a new sequence called “Grabs” inorder to assist in their thinking in scripting before the master edit begins.

The Master Cut Track currently has to be delivered to our station as a 2 track file ready to be played directly to air should that be required – Tk 1 Left = Main audio containing Voice Over and Talent, Tk 2 Right= Nat Sound Effects.

Normally field recording assigned camera tracks would be 1=talent audio (normally main radio mic internal receiver), 2=reporter’s questions (2nd external radio mic ) 3= Nat sound Effects from Camera Mic 4= optional backup between camea mic or main radio mic.

If there is a quicker way to view and edit I am certainly open to other options by all means.

  • Thanks Everest and Michael. Yes we do have suffieient Real Time Mixing tracks set up. Audio Rendering via the item only option does not assist the situation unfortunately.

The problem is editing from a 4 Track Mono Sequence to a Master 2 track stereo sequence.

The field material is recorded in 4 track audio as is most digital formats these days – XDCam, P2 and the Sony 500 using SxS cards which is the format we are using.

If only one audio track is inserted on the time line no problems with any other audio tracks in the same time frame. However if I bring down two tracks – say Audio 1 – (talent) and Audio 2 (reporter) from the four track mono camera clip raw footage sequence, audio rendering is required of the segnent that happens to overlap another clip on the timeline.

This problem does not occur if editing direcly from a camera clip, only when all the camera clips are placed in one sequence which has it’s audio outputs set to 4 track mono in order to access any of the recorded field material. We cannot use a 2 track output sequence for this raw camea footage as then we cannot access any of the 4 original field audio tracks.

Am I hearing that it in FCP it is not possible to select tracks from a sequence in the Viewer and insert (or overwrite) these to the Timeline of a Sequence that does not have the same audio properties, without having to audio render any overlapping clips??
