When you move clips to the timeline, you can choose to insert or overwrite at the playhead or wherever you drag the clip. If you want to keep other elements in your timeline unchanged, then you can lock those elements. That said, you will not be able to overwrite or insert to a locked track, it will have to go to a new or unlocked track only.
