Just Google searched the phrase “Video production workshop Kevin Riley” and this thread was 3rd in the results right below his blog.
Bet Kev ain’t too happy about that.

March 6, 2010 at 10:22 pm in reply to: Experienced DP just replaced by Flip Camera ($229)I actually just gained a client because of the pocket HD camcorder they tried to use to shoot a demo video of their product that was going to be shown at a convention this week.
This business had many thousands of dollars invested in this product and it really cheapened the appearance of it by using a pocket HD camcorder, especially being all handheld and with the built-in mic for audio. All the video was shaky, jittery, jello-effects, poorly lit and the audio had inconsistent volume levels making hard to hear what some people were saying.
Since they had no time to have me re-shoot everything properly, I showed them how to use what they had for the convention because they didn’t even have a clue on how use what they had.
First they needed me combine all 22 H.264 video clips they had shot into one video and then train them how to play that video in a loop on a large LCD monitor from a laptop that was going to be setup in their booth at a convention the next day.
By the way, the owner of the business called me at 5pm and urgently needed me to work on it that night so that he could have it the next morning to leave for the convention. This is after he had two other experienced video production people try and help him with no luck. I just happened to have experience with and own several pocket HD camcorders so I knew what to do in this situation.
Second, I showed the owner an HD demo video of how much better their video could look if he hired me. He was in shock, asking why did my video so clean and stable looking and not have the jittering, grainy or jello/shakiness that his pocket HD video had. After viewing my demo, he said that I was hired to shoot all their upcoming videos.
I guess the lesson here is you need to learn and embrace new technologies, in this case pocket HD camcorders, that your clients or potential clients are using so that when you are called upon by them like I was to help solve a problem that you can confidently respond and possibly gain a new client.

Here are some more examples of Squarespace websites with some that don’t look like templates at all. I think you need to take Squarespace much more seriously than just a template website since you can add your own custom CSS to any part of the website. Many full-time web designers are using Squarespace to design and manage websites for their clients.
Squarespace looks to be a very solid business at this point, posted on their blog this month:
“We were honored to learn today that Squarespace has been included on the 2009 Inc. 500 list.
We are thrilled to be amongst a group of some of the most innovative and fastest-growing private companies in the United States. Our rank is #339 on the overall list, #32 on the IT Services list, and #23 on the NY Regional List”

Here are some more examples that include some that have no template look to them at all. I used the Squarespace address to prove that these are websites designed using the Squarespace interface:

Here is what this guy had the say about using Squarespace to completely redesign his website from scratch. You can also see the “Powered by Squarespace” credit he has on the bottom right of his home page:
“I’ve been working on updating my website with some new work — and at the same time trying to make things a bit more ‘Web 2.0’ standards based. There have been alot of changes in online media — and it’s been fun to get up to speed with all the latest web technology.
This Squarespace engine is spectacular, and I’m amazed at what I’ve been able to put together in such a short time. I will be doing a more in-depth review of this service in the future.
Anyway, just a few more details to iron out, and I’m ready to unplug my old Flash-based site on Mediatemple and go 100% Square :)”

August 12, 2009 at 1:45 pm in reply to: a couple of simple questions about Sennheiser ME66I have the ME66, a AA battery will last a very long time as long as you either remember to turn off the mic after using it or take the AA battery out of the power module. Leave the mic on with the battery and power module still attached, it will be dead within a week.

August 12, 2009 at 12:14 pm in reply to: a couple of simple questions about Sennheiser ME66Instead of guessing how good your batteries are or how much juice they have left, why don’t you use a battery checker? They come in all different sizes. I’ve been checking all my normal and rechargeable batteries with a volt meter for many years and know down to the 100th of a volt where each type of battery should be at for optimal performance when recharged and when they have gone bad or are too low to use.
I just caught two bad AA rechargeable batteries out of 20 (came in two 10-packs) the other day and these were brand new. I checked them after all 20 had been charged to see how consistent and where the voltage was at when these type of batteries are fully charged. This way I will know when these rechargeable batteries begin to lose their useful life.
I also keep track of how low batteries can go and still function by checking the voltage after a shoot.
I basically keep track of the voltages of five types of batteries, AA normal, AA rechargeable, 9V normal, 9V rechargeable and Sony Lithium NP-F### series rechargeable batteries.

March 31, 2009 at 1:40 am in reply to: Audio saturation who need to be fixed if possibleSo much for trying to help a brother out, he never got back in touch to pay for the excellent lunch I had the other day. Hope he got what he wanted out of it.
Must have been a student, they always want something for nothing even though they usually have newer/better equipment than I do but just don’t know how to use it.
Where’s that “Grinder” rule book when I need it?
