I assume this is for news or documentary use. Here’s what I found to be useful:

    Minimal package:

    – Good ENG camera
    – Tripod
    – Light kit
    – mics (handheld & lav)
    – Batteries for everything
    – camera mounted-light
    – Cables, audio and video
    – plenty of tapes or media

    Better:

    All above, plus:

    – wireless Rx and Tx for mics (one, two is better)
    – Softbox light
    – Porta Brace cases (or equivalent)
    – Shotgun mic mounted on camera

    Best:

    All of “better”, plus:
    – portable monitor
    – equipment cart
    – spacious van or SUV
    – collapsible reflector(s)
    – hand-held 3 chip DV (for confined spaces or minimally trained others)
    – Laptop w/commonly used editing software (AVID, FCP) for commonality with the client.
    – Boom mic, boom pole, audio mixer and sound guy/gal

All these assume you’ll have the enormous amount of gadgets, gizmos, connectors, adaptors, bulbs, straps, etc. required for any situation. there is also some personal preference gear I left out that some of us out there need or require on a daily basis that other would fine useless.

    anyone else?
