Just wondering about your advice to Peter…I have 2 5xBurley enclosures with 10 Seagates, all working as Raid 0. I am within days of completing my project and I’ve been apprehensive about using DW on my raid 0 array. Is it suggested that I do so? If so, do you have DW select just the raid icon and “not” individual drives? I’m pretty sure I know the answer, just a bit timid to try it. Sorry for the basic question.

June 1, 2008 at 7:54 pm in reply to: Ideal raid setup for uncompressed 1080p 8bit workflow in fcp.Hey Guys,
Due to some personal experience lately I thought I’d add 2 cents.I have a 2 Tb project. I have a raid 0 setup which gave me great speed. I also keep a set of external firewire drives and backup my raid system daily using syncro pro x. And it was great insurance. I have had the raid 0 setup fail/corrupted once due to a power outage and the drives needed to be reformatted. With the backup drives I was able to replace everything perfectly… and with a lot lower cost than a Raid 5 setup.
I’m also using one of the backup drives with space left to use when I playout the film as a QT Movie, which for me will be about 600 gigs. Then I’ll take that drive to the post house for finishing.
Hope it was some help.

Ben,
Thanks for that insight. That certainly does give me a whole new way of looking at the issue. What had perplexed me most was that it seemed to have happened at a very specific moment when I created a new bin and made a copy of the cut. So I did have some suspicions of possible corruption, but I didn’t know where to start. Anyway… I did have a huge project, so it won’t hurt to break it up like I did.
Again, thanks for you valuable info.

Thanks Mark,
Yeah, I’ve learned my lesson. Since I split the project into pieces tonight, there have been no further problems. I have one project now dedicated only to the cuts. Appreciate the 400 number, that gives me something to go on in the future.thanks

Hi Jeremy,
Since I posted, I have tried something else. I opened the big project, copied the current cut, started a new project, pasted the cut, then closed the original project… and the cut plays. Have I just exceeded the mass on the one project that my computer cannot handle?
thanks

Thanks Jeremy,
The fcp project shows 460mb when I “apple I” it. The physical media takes up 2.4 terabytes. But I have 2.6 available space. My internal hard drive is 233 with 50% free space. My specs below:
G5 quad, 2.5, 8 gigs ram,
Burley Enclosure with 10 x 500gig Seagates, as raid 0. -
I only have one project open. The activity monitor shows that I have about 4 gig free ram after the project opens. But as soon as I try to open the cut, it says out of memory. It is a very big project.
I have tried splitting the project into three parts and each part works okay.thanks
