Out Of Memory 2
Posted by Randolph Harrison on February 1, 2008 at 4:51 amHey guys, thanks for responding last night. Sorry I was away from my computer until now. Today I bought two more gigs of ram (total 8) now. When I restarted my computer, opened the project, and clicked on a bin with the one time line of the entire show (85 minutes)… it stated out of memory and the bin didn’t open.
I will try monitoring the ram as you suggested.
Would the computer also be using up memory for all of the old FCP projects on my hard drive. Many were first incarnations of my final project?
Also are there startup programs that I can alter… not sure how?
Thanks again,

February 1, 2008 at 5:20 amI only have one project open. The activity monitor shows that I have about 4 gig free ram after the project opens. But as soon as I try to open the cut, it says out of memory. It is a very big project.
I have tried splitting the project into three parts and each part works okay.thanks

The fcp project shows 460mb when I “apple I” it. The physical media takes up 2.4 terabytes. But I have 2.6 available space. My internal hard drive is 233 with 50% free space. My specs below:
G5 quad, 2.5, 8 gigs ram,
Burley Enclosure with 10 x 500gig Seagates, as raid 0. -

February 1, 2008 at 5:38 amHi Jeremy,
Since I posted, I have tried something else. I opened the big project, copied the current cut, started a new project, pasted the cut, then closed the original project… and the cut plays. Have I just exceeded the mass on the one project that my computer cannot handle?
thanks

I think so. Your original project might be a little too big. This is a shortcoming of FCP. If you can, break you project up into parts and you might have better luck.
Bummer.

That’s BIG!
Anything over 400mb is asking for trouble. Our typical project sizes are usually below 250.

Yeah, I’ve learned my lesson. Since I split the project into pieces tonight, there have been no further problems. I have one project now dedicated only to the cuts. Appreciate the 400 number, that gives me something to go on in the future.thanks

February 1, 2008 at 2:57 pmHi Randy
If you search for ‘out of memory’ on the cow, you’ll turn up quite a few of these queries. One thing that’s pretty clear is that the error has nothing to do with RAM or project size. I used to get this error on small projects all the time. My guess is that FCP tries to perform a mathematical operation (like: divide x by zero) that it cannot compute, and it causes the project to fail or become corrupted.
The method you describe will definitely cure the problem, however I just got into the habit of using a previously autosaved version, and redoing the last 15 mins of work. Always worked without fail. This seems to suggest the issue is also not caused by a bad render file or media file. FYI, I used to see this issue most of when using nesting, so use it sparingly now and have not seen this error for a while.
Hope that helps – obviously it’s just a personal observation.

Thanks for that insight. That certainly does give me a whole new way of looking at the issue. What had perplexed me most was that it seemed to have happened at a very specific moment when I created a new bin and made a copy of the cut. So I did have some suspicions of possible corruption, but I didn’t know where to start. Anyway… I did have a huge project, so it won’t hurt to break it up like I did.
Again, thanks for you valuable info.
Randy
