With Rave, if the material is log it is captured as log. That is the wonderful thing about working with DPX. Nice to see others finally getting the picture as to what is really possible.

Gary, wouldn’t go quite that far. Bobs stuff is very good and I recommend it often, but plenty of us are doing, and have been doing this for years 🙂

I would highly recommend the $300 breakout box. The system will be less likely to endure damage using the Kbox vs a direct connection to the I/O board, but be weary that even with the Kbox, problems can be had for those not using proper practices or caution.
Better to replace a $300 Kbox than a $2500 Kona card. In addition you will get the analog ports that you might find very useful. Sorry can’t recommend the mounting as all our clients install in full racks.

Rave is a turnkey software/hardware product. We use the AJA hardware, as well as many other components most are familiar with. Many years back we wrote the first Linux driver for the boards (before there was even a Kona or Xena line) and continue to develop our own driver for these (not because AJA isn’t good but because we tie it into other devices and we like full control over every aspect of what we do).

We know this hardware intimately and work to insure the hardware delivers the utmost quality, no sneaky 10bit to 8bit, back up to 10bit stuff going on here. You want 10 bit, you are insured of getting it all the way thru the solution. (of course there are options to take it to 8bit if you wish)
Your requirement is one we are very familiar with, as most of our clients are all high-end facilities doing stuff for film-outs and or prime-time shows all working in 4:4:4 and the solution must have the ability to work in both full and SMPTE range accurately and or take full range down to SMPTE scale.

I am not a FCP expert, actually not even a novice but am looking at this from another approach which may be worth a look.
From your hardware perspective, is it safe to say that (Ben) both of your systems are configured the exact same way. Software, firmware, drivers, SLOTS, etc. Applications running on the system.
You would think, what does it matter. But in this world of pushing lots of data, really fast and sustaining it, all of this matters, especially if you need to stay in sync with other devices. One item out of whack can throw off a timing issue.
If something is off just a millisecond (how long it takes to get from point A to point B) then the results will be failure. I have to admit I have never seen the gray video result you are seeing, but our code is also designed to just stop if it doesn’t work, thus we wouldn’t get that.
Also, are you testing with the same sequence and or same project on both machines to rule out the possibility of user error (those are sometimes the most frustrating).

Rave – The deck replacement choice for Hollywood -
We support both full range and SMPTE range in Rave using the AJA hardware (on the fly) so yes, no problem on the hardware side.
I’m guessing this is more of can the application support what the hardware can, than just if the hardware can.
We provide the ability to take full range and play it out as both full and SMPTE range, as well as offer the option of full range to be ingested in as either.

RAID set up really depends on the application and the hardware.
RAID 0 can be used when the video is view as temporary. “I put it here to print it there”, “I just need to see my work”. “I have a backup”
The advantage is there is no rebuild time if a failure occurs. Some may be able to move the backed up content back onto the unit FASTER than it takes to do a rebuild.
RAID 5 offers the ability to loose a drive in the array without loosing the content. Depending on the thruput of your array, you may be able to play content even with a dropped drive, which does not shut you down for hours.
The disadvantage is yes, the rebuild time. Not a disadvantage if your rebuild can happen in the background and your unit can still be used while doing so. If it is not up to par, then you will be dead in the water for hours (the time will depend on the total capacity of your unit).
We have some customers running a Rave in both Raid 0 and Raid 5, since we offer two arrays on every unit and with mirroring and syncing they really get the benefit of both worlds. Oh they are all so clever……
Others run completely in RAID 0, others all in RAID 5.
There is no right or wrong answer here or a black and white one. It all depends on your workflow and the tools, hardware and expertise you have in it.

Not sure if this helps but hopefully it will help narrow it down.
First off, thruput is important, so yes make sure it is not coming from a system drive (doesn’t work very well doing that)
DPX through the AJA hardware is spot on, we do it everyday, all day long so you can eliminate that. I would give AJA support a call, they are masters at helping.

The AJA boards are very good and just continue to exceed the needs of high-end work. I would like to add that the app using them has much to do with how well the boards work. Not all apps are created equal or perform the same way.
We like to push these boards to their fullest potential and will continue to find new ways to do so.

Quicktime is great but I would much rather work with file sequences where at all possible.
During an edit if I need to replace a small sequence, I simply drop in those frames rather than replace the whole clip.
During a render if a few frames go bad, I would rather re-render just those frames rather than the whole sequence.
wrapped formats such as QT, AVI and others are great for delivery but while I am working I want full control over every last frame….
Everyday more and more of the “video” side is catching on to how the “film” side works and hopefully another couple years at it, there won’t be a difference.
