So this was resolved (sort of) in the Apple forums. Apparently Motion doesn’t like QTs that don’t have timecode. If you bring in captured video it’s fine. Fortunately instead of laying clips off to tape, you just have to bring them into FCP and re-export them from the timeline. I left all of my settings 30p, Animation compression with alpha and had no discernible quality loss.

    Hope this helps.

Well, I’ve hooked the big plasma up to my box via VGA to my Radeon 9800 Pro. In Final Cut’s Digital Cinema Desktop it plays back real time, but at a crappy resolution, although I have yet to set up everything per Apple’s suggestions. In Quicktime it looks lovely, but drops frames. I’ll screw around with this for a little while longer, then perhaps consider an upgrade. Thanks all.

But if I were to get a second video card, couldn’t I use the Plasma like a third monitor? There’s a 1920×1080 preset with the Radeon 9200 and the plasma has a PC in port.
