it’s been 9 months.. and here is an update I wanted to share since it’s been a journey on this thread.

I ended up selling the GH5 for personal a few months after. I was given an opportunity to rebuild and this may be a chock to some and some may not agree but I picked up the Canon c100 Mark 2 a few days ago. So yes in late 2018 I bought this Camera brand new kit with the 24-105 L 2 version lens.

I could of bought the gh5s or even 2 gh5s for the price i paid for this camera. I am aware but I was missing the c100, this is my third c100 but this time I got it brand new and it’s the mark 2. (hey that rhymed) It came down to my target clients etc, even coverage, long for speeches , interviews etc. I am very happy with my choice and there is no issues, the 2 used units i bought seemed to have some issue. (first one screen hinge was on it’s way out.) 2nd one the image was pulsing in the darks too much. Something didn’t feel right.

This one so far is amazing, clean and nothing bothers me. The built in Audio XLR, the Built in ND filters oh how I love and missed those. (i had screw on nd filters but it affected the image on my gh5s it would also capture fog in it in the winter) The auto focus for capturing quick situations, the wide DR profile, colours. 60 fps for a little slow down, the amount data used cause the AVHCD makes the work flow fast. I have no desire for 4k still. the 4k sensor in this camera that produces a really nice 1080p image. Ok I’m gushing cause low key I always wanted the Mark 2 but it was out of my budget. So I took this opportunity and got what I really wanted. This will always stay in my kit for my main situations. I will grab one of the newer 4k cameras in the near future, but I am very happy with my decision to get this solid workhorse of a camera in late 2018, some may think I am crazy but for me. This worked out.

Just wanted to share this update with yall. So anyone thinking this late in the game don’t feel too bad if you decide to go with older solid tech. At the end of the day like people mention. It’s the right tool for the right job…

Thank you, and thanks for the tip and the information that makes me feel like I made a good decision. It’s weird tho, it hasn’t fully sunk in yet that I made the switch lol. I use to love the GH3 tho, in fact I still do. So I know I will love the GH5. I definitely will try out those settings you suggest. If I had the option I would keep a c100 mk2 in my arsenal tho. Still a very solid camera for certain jobs
    I’m excited. yet nervous. ☺

    Ok everyone,

so.. The craziest thing happened. After being all bummed out about the results of my Ebay auction. I went to a local camera shop to look at lens for the c100 again cause I was certain I was “stuck using the c100” for a while. As I am looking at some lens, some guy asks me how I like my Canon c100 ( I had it out trying out lens) I say its great but I just feel I need to upgrade to a GH5 to challenge myself. I actually had it on Ebay but it didn’t work out for me. He said oh the one that went for $1800? I said no way what? yeah that one i didn’t sell it tho i said. He said I bid on it and was out bid last second. I said yeah $1800 is too low especially after ebay takes their cut.

I told him I even had it on Kijiji for 2k for a day. I was shocked no one messaged me. He said oh I didn’t see it but I will give you 2k for it. I was thinking. uhh damn for real. ok uhh let me just sleep on it. We exchanged emails and later that night I was doing some thinking about the whole situation. I decided that the universe put me and this guy in line for a reason, seriously that is nuts how the guy who bid on my camera and myself were in the same location the same day a few hours after the auction. So I took it as a sign and let him know I was down to sell it. Fast forward to today. We met again at the local camera shop (Shout out to Downtown Camera here in Toronto) He picked up the c100 from me and I picked up the GH5! man it’s crazy how the world works! and if by chance you are reading this dood. LOL whats up! So this is how my chapter ended with the C100, Just thought I would share with you all. Thank for reading.

yeah, well at least you are in a position to have that option ☺ at the moment I had to have either or and guess what? my c100 didn’t do well on ebay and i decided not to sell it it went for 1800 CAD ($1400 U.S) i did my research and cameras just like mine were trending at $2300-$2400 CAD ($1800-1900) US C100 with DAF 228 hours, extra battery 64 SD card. wasn’t good enough so i backed out and I am going to have to keep it and just make more money like i said in the beginning and buy a gh5 and add it to my Gear. And yes I can agree with you for some situations the c100 stands out too much ☹ I use to be like yeahhh big ass camera look at me! now I am aware and sometimes feel a bit “uncomfortable” of course it depends on the situation. ok folks well ina few months hopefully I bump this thread with good news and own a GH5 lol aslo have you heard about “GH5s” lol

    hey everyone.

so I am still in this situation my C100 is on ebay and about to end tomorrow. IF i don’t close to what I want I will probably back out but if I do get what I want, I can get one step closer to the gh5. Here is the issue and I know it may not be a deal breaker for many but man.. Using the c100 I barley see any Moire . so when I did some test shooting with the GH5, especially in the slow mo it was horrible! so much noticeable moire, it actually has me having 2nd thoughts about this whole GH5 thing. I looked at so many GH5 videos and unless you are shooting up close and very picky, all wide shots of buildings or fences tree bark all have some major moire, it’s disgusting, i can’t unsee it..

how are you all dealing with it? are you not turned off? I know I gain a lot but i lose a lot too sigh this is frustrating.

@https://my.creativecow.net/Julian-Croot do you have this issue at all with Moire? I re read your post to help me lean over to buy the GH5 but again when i look at footage the Moire is strong turn off. I rarely see this on my c100…

    hmph

I see some of your points. I feel like I am missing out with the slow motion ability, I want to make some nice looking music videos and other kind of creative videos and I feel that the slow motion would really help make the vision come to life. Is it the only way, no but it sure would help.

What would you do if you had say a c100 mk 1 and could pretty much sell it and get the exact amount to buy a gh5 would you sell?

    sigh

giving up the XLR and ND filters. And form factor stings. I don’t know what to do. earlier I said oh I could possibly get both, but it doesn’t lok like that is the case. as I dropped a ton of money on upgrading my editing work station

    /end rant

Congratulations on your purchase, after you get use to it the menu system, it won’t be a problem. I too will buy a GH5 eventually. But for me the c100 is the right tool for me. But for sure I want to grab a gh5 so I can offer 4k, slow mo, higher bitrate for color correction or grading, for more serious projects. Isn’t this field fun? I keep learning something new and getting better, I’m really enjoy this Cinema/videography world!

  • yeah I don’t know about that answer, But thanks for chiming in.

your situation is no where near my situation. I only found out later he was selling the videos as a digital training product for 5k. I gave him a break to help him out cause I thought it was just for personal promo use. Anyway I learned from this. and won’t let a situation like that happen again.

June 23, 2017 at 6:49 pm in reply to: How would you quote this?

Just wanted to say, I read some good things in this thread. And to the person who can’t get %50 percent up front. yikes. That is like industry standard. I don’t move or get booked unless I get my %50 percent upfront, and then the remaining on delivery. I don’t ask for %25 percent when sent a first draft. That’s interesting.

I also shot the stuff I edit so for sure %50 upfront, As a matter of fact, one of my clients, we have a good relationship that they give me %100 up front due to my previous reliability etc.

  • Thanks for all the responses. Sorry for the late reply. It comes down to this. I made him these videos charged him 1k he turned around and sold my work as a digital product (training material) and charged 5k even if he only sold 1, he is laughing. I just was wondering if I had the right to feel my way, and there seems to be am mix, some say, oh you’re just a work for hire everything is his he can do what he wants with it, while others says something else more in line how I was feeling.

I don’t want a percentage of what he sells. that would be hard to prove anyway, he could just b.s the numbers, So I made my decision., I will just include in my rate a licensing fee to keep me from getting upset. The problem is this. I mentioned this when we did a smaller project and he paid me $350 for the whole mini digital product and was selling it for 450 or something like that. When I said hey, you can’t do that to me you need to pay me more if you are selling as a digital product. He says , well it’s a risk on my end I can end up not selling anything and take a loss.

to the person saying it may be great to have this guy which can lead to work, yeah right, I have been working with him over 2.5 years and all this initially started from, you get me clients you don’t pay full rate etc, He got me 1 client in 2.5 years. A lot of , oh you’re going to get so much business from me blah blah. Nothing. 1 client which actually end up in a cancellation due to some other b.s

I am feeling like he is taking advantage of me, such as sales guys do. No more friend prices. This was all friend prices no contracts etc. I don’t even want to work with him anymore after i type all this out and realize and feel this way so, I probably won’t unless he pays me exactly what I want and I am satisfied. No more hook up.

Thanks for reading. I apologize for my grammar errors.
