December 8, 2011 at 4:36 am in reply to: Transcoding XDcam footage of premiere project for DaVinci Resolve import…That’s not crazy, I’ll give it a try, thanks.
I think I read something similar on Walter Biscardi’s forum, but he didn’t use an edl I think, just Resolve’s built-in edit detection tool. Although I fail to understand how dissolves would show up properly, wouldn’t those get baked in when you export the master file?

October 16, 2011 at 10:25 pm in reply to: good zoom lens to use on 7D for concert shoot ?Thanks Phil for your thoughts.
I thought about that, but truth be told, this is a small gig for friends which I’m basically doing pro-bono for fun and practise, with the possibility of using the footage in an upcoming doc project, which I am currently co-developing with a director friend. While the Ensemble I’m filming don’t mind paying for my lens rental (about 35$ for a L lens in Montreal), I think the price of renting a good video cam might be a little high for them, and since the doc isn’t in production yet, any money would be coming out of my own pocket at this stage. There is a possibility I might have a fellow cameraman’s EX-3 in my possession at that time, in which case of course I’d make good use of it, but it’s not guaranteed I can use it as he tells me the camera might be locked in another shoot the same day. I might also have acces to a panasonic AG-HMC 70P, to use as a static b-cam. but the quality of image I find to be so-so in my experience, specially in low light situation.
so I think I’d still like to try out a lens with my 7D, if only for experience sake. The concert is also very short, about 1h, with only 45min of music I’d say, plus the sound I’m already taking care of separately, recording with a soundevice (stereo sound capture, it’s classical music so no mixer feed).

March 14, 2011 at 10:27 pm in reply to: chosing a first sound bank for sound design workThanks for your replies guys, appreciate it.
Bob, very good advice. I think I’ll narrow things down based on what I’m likely to need for my next project and don’t have. It’s also nice to now sound folks help each other out, always refreshing. I already knew about freesound.org, I’ve found some real gems at times there, Sounddogs.com for buying individual sounds is a ressource I didn’t know about so thanks for that as well.
cheers

Thank you both for your answers.
to tell you the truth, we are a small production house, and we are all forced to wear many hats at different times… as such while my primary function is VFX and CG, I’m also at time assistant editor, IT guy, production assistant, etc. and the editor is also the producer and the director, and frankly he comes to me when it comes to format and technological issues… which is why I’ve have to take matter into my own hand and seek answers elsewhere sometimes
we have an online editor however who comes in later in the process to do the post, colour correct, conform, etc. He is of course very knowledgeable, and I’ve already met with him to discuss some of these issues, unfortunately he is not knowledgeable in AFX, and so cannot give AFX specific advice for my workflow. that said I will be having a discussion again with him in the coming week concerning various other issues and I’ll be sure to bring this up to make sure I understand the needs properly as it relates to my cg work…
Again thank you.

thank you both for your replies.
I had completely forgotten about that Tutorial which I now remember seeing when it was posted!
Eran also mentions this tutorial https://library.creativecow.net/articles/langley_david/3d_ribbon_text.php which I found also quite useful because I like working with expressions…as it turns out, after making my post here, I decided to give Maya a shot and see what I could do without wasting to much time… and well I’m pretty satisfied with the result so far, but it’s going to take a bit longer to render…
so I haven’t decided what I’ll do just yet, but most likely I will created a first draft version in AE so the editor can put it in his timeline, and also rough in the pacing of the shot, and then I’ll probably make the final shot in Maya.
thanks again
