  • OP: The only way I was eventually able to get this to work was with a Sony VRDMC6 (it was only $200-$300 when it was available, it looks like the new model is the Sony VRDMC5 – $306.99 on Amazon).

It puts a goofy menu at the top of the DVD, but it was the only thing I was really able to get to work.

Ben – Do you have any recommendations on what codec I should transcode to, or a system or piece of software I can sue to do the transcoding? I tried dropping the footage into “Squared 5 – MPEG Streamclip,” but it could not play the original video very well. Avid’s DNxHD sounds like a option I certainly haven’t tried. Do you have any suggestions on how I should move forward?

Jeff – I’m sorry, I misspoke. These are not “Digital8” tapes, they are “Video8” tapes. I have used the Firewire port on Digital8 cameras in the past. Unfortunately, I had to find alternative means for this instance — thus the use of the USB box. Now knowing that they are Video8, do you have any other recommendations?

    Thanks for your help.
