So in essence, I could have just stayed with the stock NV300 and gotten nearly the same speed. (It performed well even with only 2GB of RAM.) Not very impressive…

    Hi all!

So I have my 6 core, 4 channel bus CPU, 16GB RAM, and Q2000 card up and running. I did some benchmarking comparisons but I’m not seeing the results expected…

I through together a 30 second HD timeline with several various, transitions and rendered it out to 1920 for Internet MP4, using the stock (NV300) video card and RAM, then with the Q2000 and RAM upgrade.

    Results:
    NV300, 2GB RAM, 16 threads-
    GPU-off = 1:12
    GPU-on = 1:11
    GPU-on, 8 threads* = 1:10

    * I thought max threads was cores x 2, so I tried setting it lower. Also I got a high CPU usage warning on the first two, but not the third.

    Q2000, 16GB RAM, 16 threads-
    GPU-off = 1:09
    GPU-on = 1:07

At this point I checked the Q2000 driver and updated it to the latest, but I didn’t see any change, I think (my notes got confused at that point).

    —-

    Two questions:
    – Any input on thread usage selection?
    – Shouldn’t I see a significant render time decrease when enabling GPU acceleration, and is there a set of benchmark files somewhere online that I could use to compare against?

    Thanks!

Some say ECC is (slightly) slower, others claim that with larger amounts of RAM the error rate increases enough to make it worth the minor speed hit. Personally I think it’s splitting hairs for all but the very high end applications. The main issue for me is cost, and I don’t like being pushed toward ECC when (imo) it’s not necessary. On the other hand, given the choice where the price hit is not awful, I would opt for ECC.

If I followed your trail on the 4K type of source material you haven’t seen it be nearly the same RAM sucker as the latest high pixel DSLR stills. I lean toward quality first, quantity second… so a good CPU, 8GB (ECC if affordable), and 4-bus (for Dave 🙂 ). More RAM can always be added as necessary.

Back on the GPU question… In the Quadro line I have settled on the 2000, simply because the rendering performance gain with the 4000 didn’t seem that great. Alternately, if I really want bag-for-buck on speed (and don’t mind the possibly of some hassles) I would give the GTX-570 a shot. It has a decent track record (over the 6xx line) and many report that it works solidly. (nVidia and PNY both agree with this logic while politely making the Quadro the official recommendation.) So we’ll see…

And… I gotta say, I’ve never kissed my computer (I did see that usage, though I’ve never heard used), but if all goes well I might make an exception. 😉

My original question was memory access vs. memory size, as it applies to Vegas. And yes, you can upgrade memory size but not access path in a system, and I decided on a 4 busss 😉 system fairly soon for that reason and that, as expected, I could see that access path was important to video processing. (Dave is probably correct, https://www.worldwidewords.org/articles/omnibus.htm but “buss” is also widely used and acceptable.) The question was spawned in part by system options (some requiring more expensive ECC RAM for larger amounts of RAM in a 4 buss system), and in part to the i7-3770 (2 buss) CPU that many seem to be doing well with. As far as CPU I have decided on an E5-1620 or better (better meaning a 6 core).

Just curious, given that 4K video is ~about~ 9Mpx (1/2 that of 18Mpx) would you think 4K would also require greater than 8GB? I’ve never worked in 4K (yet, right…?)

In short, to compile all I’ve read the past couple days: speed/quality/price, pick any two.

[John Rofrano] “I’m not sure the Quadro 600 is worth it. That’s pretty low end. I have a Quadro 4000 and I love it. That seems to be the sweet spot of the Quadro line price/performance wise.”

I’ve gotten a lot of good input on CPU/RAM and mobo, both here and over on SCS’s forum, and I’m down to trying to sort out the GPU part.

I’m getting input on the GTX line’s suitability that is all over the place, but then there’s the page on SCS where is shows a GTX 570 beating a Quadro 5000 (VP11 tests). The GTX specs “look” better than the Quadro’s (if you can trust specs) but I also hear talk about the processing being different, with the Quadro being more suitable for video.

Has there ever been a Quadro/GTX shootout for rendering?

Are the current (6xx, non-fermi) GTX boards supported by Sony and stable or not? (I, like others have reported, got the frustrating runaround when trying to get an answer out of Sony for current version hardware.)

Do you think a Quadro 2000 is a decent option for full HD editing, and at what point do I need to look to the 4000?

Sorry for the wandering questions and thank you all for the help.

    -edit-

Just found this link: https://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm Pretty decent info, though it’s not specific to Vegas. The GTX 570 looks good, and I seem to have run in to many posts saying it works well with Vegas.

John, in looking at info on your website I came across your Dell comments. The link you posted about it was dead. Are you still “death on Dell”? One option I was considering was a Dell Precision (T3600 or better). I have been a long term Dell user and have had excellent experiences.

Regarding the GPU, I think I will at least bump up to the Quadro 2000, possibly the 4000. I do think that the Quadro line is the way to go at this point though.

That’s kind of how I was thinking, 2GB/core as a rule of thumb. I wasn’t sure if v12 had made much difference in that area.

On the NVIDIA, I’ll be doing some more research. I had considered the 600 the minimum, but possibly adequate, but was also thinking of the 2000. Thanks, I’ll dig into it more.

As a matter of fact I have been lurking here for quite some time and have searched. I haven’t seen much help in this specific area. MANY old posts, but specs for previous versions are useless. I’m not quite the noob you apparently take me for… but I’m open to any relevant links you want to post.
