matthews make good gear. I use paladin c-stands (they are a hollywood rental house that makes their own) way cheaper than matthews and built to professional standards. I think stands were $90, arms around $25. I use a bogen rags set-up identical specs to the matthews I think around $200-$300. My prices are 4-5 yesr old though – with the case for the stands and higher resale value the Matthews kit is probably not a bad deal.
lowel rifas work well for me when working alone – mounted on an articulated stand they make make great backlights. You can position the backlight directly behind the talent without the stand being visible. Sets-up in a couple of minutes.

1. you are right of course – my preference is for simpler more subtle styling but I don’t mean that highly stylised edits will disappear, if the money is available they can often be the best choice. It’s in our own interests, and in the interests of our clients that we break the simple=cheap equation that is the obvious corollary to expensive=elaborate.

I got an answer to my question. I emailed a couple of screengrabs from a canon XL H1 to a professional photo printer. Explained I had video screengrabs that I wanted to print and display at a bridal show alongside the booths of professional photographers. The question was how big can i go before lack of resolution makes my work look bad compared to the photographers’? This lab prints work for a lot of professional photographers.
Just got the following email:
Hi Peter,
These are very high quality video screengrabs.
You will get excellent 8×10, good 11×14 and ok 16×20.
Let me know what you would like me to do.

Mark – That prediction could be wrong of course, they all could be – predictions are always uncertain, especially when they concern the future.
agreement or disagreement is fine but also more predictions.

Douglas – is it feasible to import your HD footage onto an SD timeline and just crop to SD res? So that an HD clip of a couple facing one another could appear on an SD timeline as two separate full SD res clips each containing just one person? That’s where I see an immediate place for HD in my work. To be able to leave an HD camera unattended on wide and then just choose the shot in post.

compression blocks in the dark flat areas? You mean compression blocks on tape? can you just lower the pedestal in the camera and crush the blacks a little? or fix it in your NLE?

some very pretty shots Douglas. Did you tweak the aspect ratio for the web version? Stage performances are going to be outsatnding with that setup.

Difficult to divine what this company may have been told by their attorneys. They could be ready to drop the practice as soon as they receive a ‘cease and desist’ from a copyright holder. might be a while coming….how many artists/rights owners are going to object? sony etc. realize that the best way to curb piracy is to make staying legal easier and cheaper. “Gotta pay extra to do that” won’t help the cause.
Do Walgreens do this also? Their management would want more assurances as to the legality of the practice.

very cool – the examples page shows what I found out after paying $$$ for a mosaic app: some pictures mosaic very prettily, others just look kind of blah. And rarely do any approach the feel of a handmade one.

useless for editing yes – but very useful for showing off your work. I haven’t seen any speakers for it yet
