black bars on side when capturing DV from XL1
Whenever we import footage from our Cannon XL1 into Final Cut Pro HD, there are lines about 5 pixels wide that run down the entire left and right sides of the video. The capture settings are DV NTSC (default) and it seems as if the pixel ratio is correct – I don’t know where these bars are coming from! Cannon says their camera is incapable of producing these lines – but I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this nuisance and if they had any ways to fix the problem (without changing the scale of the whole image or cropping). Is the problem with the camera or in final cut itself?

It’s not FCP, you’re just making a clone of the DV file when you capture via FW. It’s on your video from the camera. Or it’s in how your file is being displayed by FCP, project settings are not congruent with clip settings. Impossible to tell from here and there are so many weird little things that can go wrong.
All I can tell you is that my buddy’s XL1 does NOT have this issue.
Canon’s DV codec is notoriously odd. Check the Canon DV forum here on the cow.
If you cannot find a quick fix, you start an extensive binary test, changing only one aspect of the test procedure each iteration. Eventually you make an intuitive leap and figure it out.

the black bars on the side are a fact of life with the XL1. They disappeared with the XL1-s

Don’t worry, this is normal for that camera, and it is in the overscan area that will not show on TV.
