Actually, MC’s format support runs circles around the old FCP.

There is a 30 day trial of Media Composer so you can give it a go. Keep in mind that the current 5.5 release requires a 32 bit Kernel though. 6.0 will be full 64 bit (and it will still have all the features:-).
Given the fact that a large number of editors are without a “home” right now, I am very curious to see what Avid does in the coming months. There are rumours that the Kona will work with an upcoming release of MC which would be awesome. 64bit MC with all the features on can hope for, third party capture cards which lots of us already have and are rock solid.

  • I can use tools from AJA or BMD today to capture and output. That’s not the issue. The issue is that I cannot even get a file with four channels of audio out of FCP X which I then could output to tape.

What exactly do you mean with separating audio? Assigning channels, outputting for example four channels of audio instead of stereo? All that can’t be done.

    You cannot separate audio tracks.

Yes, but there is no preset for a Prores timeline or capture. And I cannot manually create one that works.

  • Why would you call Premier for example tape based? On the contrary: it handles all the various taples formats and it does so natively. Unlike FCP X which doesn’t. They just understood that people still use tape and therefore the feature is there.

Ok, but let’s say all I want to do it bring in 60 minutes of video, do one or two cuts and then output the whole thing to tape.
It looks as if I have to render the whole thing before I can edit to tape or unless I am in a prores timeline and I cannot find any way to make one with a Kona or Blackmagic card to be used for output. It seems I also cannot capture via Premiere using Prores which baffles me because I can using the tools from AJA or BMD.

They went App Store because it is an app that doesn’t require volume licensing or larger deployment because it simply will not be used by any professional facility but by prosumers.

What is this? The x-files? 70 per cent of the app’s established user base considers jumping ship and all Apple, who cares so much about their pro users, would have to say are four words: “we will fix this”. Instead they keep quiet and/or it the, its true, super-cinical quote from Ubillos which in your book could mean that updates to address the source of the outrage are coming. Unreal!
