This was in response to a question about bringing the F350 to a HD Cinematography workshop.

Just checked in with our tech staff. Here is their response:

“Interesting camera. But it’s not really HD – almost, certainly, but not
quite. He should certainly bring his camera, but it will likely not be used
as a ‘class’ camera. Sony actually markets this camera as a migration path
from SD to HD – admitting in a way, that it’s not a true HD camera. The
fact that it’s max bit rate is only 35Mbps is the real damning feature,
though. HD is typically 100Mbps, such as for the Varicam, the Sony F900 and
F950 and the HVX-200. Again, he should bring the camera as it would be a
valuable tool for him to have with him, but it will very likely *not* be
used in class.”

So, it looks like the camera is not one that would be available for
obtaining the tuition break.

All our old equipment will go to state surplus when the new stuff arrives.
The state of North Carolina that is.
Not sure about the process, but Geary Morton is. He is a director (freelance – Woodwrights shop, For Your Home, Paint, Paper,Crafts…)at UNC-TV.
he has garages full of old gear from State Surplus.

The PBS station that I work at is planning on purchasing a large number of the 350’s (16!)in the next 2-3 months. They will replace our very old school pot of IKE 57,55, and 45’s.
Work flow is definatly a concern for me and I have pushed for a group of us to go to the Atlanta Sony/Apple seminar on 7/26. Hopefully we will gather some insight there, but I do wish there was some more training involved.

We shoot primarily public affairs (news but not hard news by any means), but also a whole bunch of other shows…travel and tourism, issue based magazine style shows etc.
They are shooting like the 50th season of Woodright’s Shop as we speak…on the old Beta’s of course…we will see what happens next season.
we currently broadcast a digital channel in HD, but not our air signal.

I was fortunate to be present when the local Sony rep and the japanese rep dude arrived with the ONE OF A KIND Sony XDcam HD “cinealta (silver)” at my work I work at the PBS in North Carolina. We will likely be ordering 15 or so of these cameras. This one which hadnt been totally tuned up yet was amazing.

Thanx for the quick tips. i’ll remember them next time i get a cine alta in my hands.
The 4 day shoot in the keys was pretty hectic. 3 grown men (one 280 lbs) plus 2 900’s 2 set of sticks, tapes ane batteries +
all in one canoe! needless to say it was a little nerve racking. that is not to mention the 100 or so sharks within 100 ft of us while shooting in the water.
Pretty fun experience though. They didnt even have a monitor, but i felt pretty comfy about what i rolled off. the head shooter guy kept us at preset for the most part.
To bad the crazy old goat we were shooting didnt catch any fish.(that we were going for)
Don’t think im gonna take the position if they offer it to me (barrett productions) as theyre only willing to pay 30 g a year! a little low for the risk and energy involved. (free travel and booze as a perk only goes so far)
