One easy way you could achieve what you are looking for is to add a camera layer (allow your comp to be 3d when the question arises), and then use the behavior Dolly under Camera (on the behaviors tab) and then move your camera to the side taking your text off screen.

Havent tried export trough compressor, will do that asap, although I tried many different export settings, codecs, Motion blur on/off and so on.

In regards of migrating the project to another computer, I actually posted the project in this forum a couple days earlier and Stephen Smith managed to export without issues, he was just lacking the TIFF (still pics) and the texture I was using (a jpg file). Cant really think that the TIFF or JPG were the bad apples in my comp.

Once I hit export with the render set to ‘best’ my computer freezes, including the Finder, or sometimes it would render but ignoring layers, creating some blank frames and so on.

I cant really think what is wrong, my computer is handling Final Cut perfectly and I have redone the same comp on After Effects and it works smooth, with Lossless and motion blur renders.

I am using After Effects now but really grown to like Motion for quite a few things and this problem just put me off it really.

It will be much appreciated if you can think whats causing this.

May 3, 2009 at 11:45 am in reply to: groups vs. layers

Layers are elements (including lights and camera) of your comp. Groups are folders that you can group layers (lights and camera) under the same group. What I usually do is to use groups as a way to put elements (layers) together and then I can move all this elements in the comp by moving only the group. Example: If you have a animated text you created made by a few different layers of text and lets say a animated background you can then put all these layers under one group in will to move them together in your comp in will to be quicker. On a 3d comp this could be quite important as you might need to adjust the Z axis of a few elements and you can do this with all these elements under one group.

You can also apply some effects to the group and it will work on all the layers. (it might not work with some effects and some kinds of elements). When creating a complex comp it is key to use this well or you will be swamped in an ocean of layers and will be hard to find stuff.

Hope this helps. I am sure that once you understand how to use it, your comps will be more organized and more efficient when changing.

    All the best

Thanks very much for looking into this with me mate. Can you let me know which set up you are working on?

Do you think that could have something to do with my 128mb video card?

once again, thanks for your time.

One thing I realised is that if you export the comp using the exact same settings as your project things work and the render is quick. The only problem is that I cannot turn Motion Blur on cause I have not worked with Motion Blur on in my proj.

Yeah, a few times already. Cant really understand. To me the logical thing is that if the software can Preview it with RAM it should be able to export. I am not using a crazy codec or anything, just animation or PRORES422.

Will do a few more experiments and let you know. really didnt count with this one.

Do you think it might have something to do with GPU versus Motion Blur?

I just turned the Motion Blur off and it worked fine. If I have it on it doesnt work.

    What do you think?

Thanks Craig, although I still managed to use this shots I did with 50p setting (exported as individual frames – TIFF seq and then re encoded to ProRes422) I believe that the way you telling me is the correct. Think the mistake happens when I assumed that the Sony would work in a similar way of the Panasonic HVX200.

    Will look into it.

    Thanks,
    Pedro
