Thanks Mike. I had (notice the past tense) a grossly underpowered computer and I think that was the problem with the firewire. I was using the explorer to choose a file in Vegas that was that problem solved! File -> Import worked just fine. I am using an Acer A1 Netbook right now until I can get a better computer. I think one with at least a dual core might work with either 6 or 8 GB of memory. What brand and configuration do you think might work? I can’t afford something like Work station right now.
