I got in an article in USA Today thanks to social media (LinkedIn), and I got in a book and we got a decent lead through Facebook and Twitter last year. So social media is worth pursuing, but it’s not a huge moneymaker for us at this time. It’s just another way to promote what we do and keep in touch with people we like.

One of our former social media clients got a $40K job through their Facebook page. That’s a small services company, by the way, so the $40K was a big deal.

I personally don’t have a lot of time for Twitter, I spend most of my “spare” time (read: project rendering in another window) on Facebook and occasionally LinkedIn. Just like most SMBs do.

Yes, if you do not document the discount then your clients won’t know it’s there. Seeing it in black and white makes the difference.

Good stuff in this thread- I’d like to expand it: assuming you have these audiences-

    1) Ad agencies
    2) Prodcos
    3) Directors/Producers

How would one target the decision makers?

Obviously, you have to have a great reel and probably a promo kit of some kind.

AdWeek and AdAge have listings of agencies.

Anyone have any ideas on other ways to reach these people?

I’m thinking, some fearless phone work, an intro letter, a promo kit with reel, and followup. But even if that’s a good way to go, how does one winnow down the agencies and prodcos from the thousands of listings available? Geography? I’m not so sure- some of our big clients are east coast agencies, and we’re in Hollywood.

Just looking for what’s working for others. Thanks!

Good point, Mark. It’s stuff like this that separates one’s business from that of “a dude with camera”. You know, for those potential clients who can’t see quality, at least 🙂

Absolutely brilliant! AndI believe any training expenses are a deduction. Including milk bones.

I agree with you both, but I wonder if other professions are effectively cutting their hourly rates. Like plumbers, for example.

    Plumbers unite!

I love the NPPA one, really, base office expenses @ 3,600 a year? Geez, that’s like a month’s worth in LA…

But fun & useful, thanks Craig.
