Yes sounds like 50i source material with interlaced content.
If you work with a 25P project format and the media is correctly flagged as interlaced MC will drop a motion adapter to de-interlace the content.
Or work interlaced and then choose to de-interlace when you encode.Lots of choices on how to de-interlace and getting it right is important to retain quality.

My view is it was the smart move for Adobe.
The current cloud based pricing has to compete with customers comparing it with the box price and on-going updates.
The only solution to being able to up the subscription fees is to remove the boxed option.
And as a company the on-going revenue stream of subscription takes the pressure off of having to roll out significant updates to sell as new boxed upgrades.Yes a lot of the bigger post houses will struggle with internet connected licensing requirements and companies like Avid have played it clever by continuing to support hardware dongles.
But that won’t make much of a market difference. The Post world is but a very small cog in the ever growing media creation world.

If you record direct to proves or dnx then you are effectively doing frame based recording and these are proven codes. Long GOP has its place but lots of motion stretches its ability. But to avoid it you have to start non long GOP.

Conforming back to the sources (even if it’s H264) helps prevent Concatenation of codecs.
You can’t always be sure what the final output route will be with so many finishing options nowadays so it’s easier to conform back to the source and then transcode to what you need when you know what that is.
You optionally (if the run time of the finished programme isn’t prohibitive) can conform to uncompressed which although won’t gain you anything isn’t imposing another codecs “foot print” on the media. Also you may want to do an offline online workflow with sources converted to low res media then conformed back to the sources so you make online media later.
So it’s often cheaper and practical to just convert from H264 to a finishing codec and then just use that all the way through but it’s not always about the cheapest or quickest route.

Yup lots of folks out there have no idea of the strengths of AMA and created these needlessly complex working rituals.
One thing you may struggle with Paul is that AMA mouned volumes (or files) currently have their media directories mounted in RAM and having too many AMA linked sources will eventually cause a memory bottleneck and the system will grind to a crawl making editing virtually impossible. This doesn’t gradually build up, everthing is ok until that one extra AMA link and then it happens.
So many folks have to transcode for that reason.
Also if it’s H264 footage you need a powerful crate to get good playback response.
Whatever route you take make sure you test a short example right through to finishing to be sure you are ok.Pat Horridge

April 17, 2013 at 5:16 pm in reply to: Get Avid media to original format between changing Sequence formatsHave you tried refreshing the sequence and selecting motion adapters?
It shouldn’t do that the clips in the sequence should get a green dot to indicate they don’t match the project format (including I P differences) So unless somebody consolidated or Transcoded the media (which would then bake in those motion adapters the sequence refresh should remove the unwanted motion adpaters.

April 17, 2013 at 8:06 am in reply to: Get Avid media to original format between changing Sequence formatsSounds to me like media has been crested with the content flagged as P rather then i
If if was just the sequence wrong you could modify the sequence format and the use the sequence refresh comand the( motion (adapters) to correct it..
But if the media has been ingested or transcended in the wrong format then it would have to be re-created.

Drive letter should make no difference to Avid media as it’s all “managed” AMA sources aren’t the same (yet but that may change in V7)
If you add all the setting you want to have into the site settings it will ensure any new projects or users adopt them. And to avoid incorrect project settings come across with projects don’t move the projects as such.
The common post production method is to create a fresh new project (with the same name) on the destination system (it will then have all the correct project settings via the site settings) then copy the bins from the old project to the new one and start working.
It also prevents any issues with version conflicts which shouldn’t happen but do on the odd occasion.Pat Horridge
