Borris Continuum Complete has a nice 2D particle filter that makes easy work of an effect like the one you’re after. Load BCC in your 3rd party plug-ins. Otherwise, make your text layer with a fade behavior then covert to a particle. Play with the parameters until you get the desired effect.
