if you know FCP7 then you basically know Premiere Pro, that is how similar they are, just a few minor differences. There is even a FCP keyboard shortcuts preset so you don’t have to learn new shortcuts. I learned it for an internship originally and picked it up very quickly, now I use it at my job and have used it on my last few freelance projects also.
Also, check out the book “An Editor’s Guide To Premiere Pro” by Rich Harrington, it’s a great book and will help with the transition; even after using Premiere Pro for close to a year I still learned things about it from that book that I didn’t know before.

Is there even a “Mark To Markers” function or a way to put markers on the sequence like there was in FCP7 and before? Mark To Markers is my bread and butter when cutting anything to music and it would be a shame if that was one more thing missing from X.

All very true and valid points… #3 in particular, when I was in school I’d hear somebody say “Man, what’s up with this red screen that says ‘media offline’?” at least once a day in the computer labs.
Frankly, I don’t see how a school is supposed to use FCPX at all in its current state… I think we will see a lot more Avid and Premiere campuses in the next few years.

Juicer is just a poorly made program in general and the way I see it there shouldn’t be a need for it. Yes, piracy is a concern, but every other stock content provider I’ve worked with trusts their own customers enough not to make them use a special program just to access their content, I really wish DJ would too.

Well if it does, the only software on my radar that isn’t cross-platform is Final Cut Studio 3 and Davinci Resolve. Wonder if Blackmagic would consider releasing Resolve for Windows if there was demand for it…
I’m not really looking forward to going back to Windows… I use Win7 at work and it is an improvement but it is still considerably buggier and more high-maintenance than OSX.

The first thing I thought of after hearing about the lack of volume licensing and the new barriers to project portability (moving projects from one computer to another) was “how on Earth is a school supposed to use this program?” When I was in school I don’t think I ever worked on a project on the same workstation twice, and they definitely used volume licensing.

I’m personally flabberghasted about how this release was handled and how many essential professional features are missing.
I’ll learn FCPX because I’m sure I’ll have a client at some point who will insist that I use it and I am not going to turn down money because of prejudices against software… but for my regular work I’m sticking with FCP7 and Premiere Pro.

I’m looking to upgrade the vid card on my 2008 3,1 Mac Pro soon… leaning toward the 5770 since I’ve heard that it works on any Mac Pro despite Apple’s assertion to the contrary. Was looking at the Quadro 4000 but I’ve heard very bad things about it, everything from no 10-bit support with FCP7/Color to kernel panics and it seems to break everytime there’s an update. How is the GTX 285? Can anyone comment on how it works in 2008 3,1 Mac Pros?
