I couldn’t agree with you more.
Thanks for the advice and links! A great help.
PS it’s so fun playing with AE – but takes hours of time!!

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. My client wants both web and DVD, not blu-ray at this stage, although maybe later.
I planned to film in 720p 25fps. There will be footage from the EX1 and also a PDW 700.
I will edit natively, rending to ProRes and export as QT, then into compressor for the PAL version DVD. What workflow would you suggest for the conversion to NTSC?
Thanks

Great. Thank you I will.
In terms of which version to buy. The elite is a LOT more money, but has a back focus ring. Will this make a cruitial difference or can I get away without a back focus ring? I will be using the EX1.
Also I’ll be shooting 720 25p with the Letus Exteme with my EX1 and mixing with footage shot without the letus adapter. How do the images come out when converting down to a SD DVD? and also Blu-ray?
Thanks

Hi,
Thank you.
I was going to use the Eye TV 250 to get the footage from the VHS tape to my Mac – although i’m not sure what format this will end up as. It doesn’t state on website.
https://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/250plus/product1.en.htmlExcuse my nativity here, but what sequence settings would you use for FCP; i.e. the settings are currently;
Aspect Ratio; HDTV 720p (16:19)
Compressor; XDCAM EX 720p25 (35 Mb/s VBR)
Render Control – Codec; ProRes422 (which I understand stays the same)What would you change these settings to? Or would you use Easy Setup instead?
– I ask because I have some terrible results before when downconverting to SD with XDCAM footage. The best way I found was to edit natively with the render control set to ProRes422 and then drop the file into compressor, DVD Fasted Encode 90 minutes.

Thanks for getting back to me.
In this case, the end result will be a SD DVD. I’m used to editing natively in FCP with XDCAM footage and with my render set to Prores422.
I guess changing my settings in FCP and using a different workflow would be the best solution in this case?
This does worry me slightly as I spend a long time on forums trying to find the best settings to get a decent SD DVD from EX1 footage!
Your suggestions would be very welcome.

Brightcove look really good. Although they don’t mention their prices, which makes me think they are expensive?

David,
Thanks for this. I’m still a little concerned by their caveat to pull the videos at any time. One of the projects I am working on requires embedding on many organisations websites and it they remove the video it will look really bad on my company.
Thanks

Hi Michael,
It has been hugely beneficial. I have been searching forums for the answers for many days and not found my answer, until this thread.
I will try shooting in SP mode and see what results I get from that, but I have to say, the results look pretty good from Steve’s workflow. Maybe a little bit blurred on low light shots, but then again, that could be my shooting.
For information, when I turned the detail off, I experienced no twitter/aliasing at all. Although I am going to test the camera again tomorrow by burning a variation of shots, SP, HQ, Progressive/Interlaced with varying degrees of detail and see what results I get.

Thanks for this workflow. Image looks a LOT better then it did the first time.
Just to throw another workflow I discovered into the mix. Have you tried this?
Edit as normal in HD in FCP
Choose File>Export to XDCAM. This will create a BAPV folder with your project in it.
Launch XDCAM EX Clip Browser and open the BAPV folder
Choose File>Export>Raw DV
Use the newly created DV file to create your DVD using standard DVD software.Apparently people are getting some very good results.

Great, I will try this.
Are you increasing the average bit rate for better quality and changing the frame controls in any way?
