Waw Filip, thank you and this is all very engaging.

Thank you Tero, I didn’t know about OpenColorIO and YEAH in hindsight I guess that leaving AE CM off is a pretty good option after all.

Thank you Filip for your interesting question and Walter for your amazing answer as usual šŸ™‚

I would please have an extra question, since I discovered that my video footages in AE are displayed correctly when “View > Use Display Color Management” was DISABLED. When it’s ENABLED the footages look a bit off (sort of a slightly different gamma) in AE compared to VLC media player (regular FHD H264 MP4 files from the web).

AE online help says that “View > Use Display Color Management” should be enabled in most cases, so I’m kinda confused here.

FYI my screen is a new Asus ProArt PA24AC with accurate colors out of the box, with no setup accept for “Rec 709 mode” (instead of Standard or sRGB modes in the screen menu) and no color calibration / colorimetric probe.

Just disturbed by this option that seems to work backwards, which means that my understanding is backwards šŸ™‚

Thank you in advance for shedding some light here, I’m sure the explanation is fairly simple.

    Good day.

Hey Luiz, maybe somewhere in the chain a Rec.709 profile is assumed instead of your sRGB.
Anyways in After Effects you can go into your Output module in the Render queue, and then beside “Main options” you have another tab “Color management” : here you can hopefully deal with your color shift.

Thank you for your insight, very interesting.
So a profile using “Rec.709” in it’s name can be gamma 2.4 or 1.9 or 2.2 or something else…
We tempting to operate as if none of this interesting topic ever existed ☺

February 25, 2020 at 4:58 pm in reply to: Better DOF in After Effects?

Ok guys you are going to like this :

In the Camera layer, expand the Camera Options settings and in “Iris shape” just pick another shape : the default is “Fast rectangle” but you have all iris shapes available here, exactly like in the Lens blur effect.
And you have many other usefull iris and dof settings there too.

Results get much much better and this is definitely a poor – or at least very “fast preview oriented” – default DOF setting…

    Hope this helps

February 13, 2020 at 3:39 pm in reply to: is there no simple crop in After Effects?

    Hello,
search for “Crop Edges” in the Effects & Presets panel : it will apply a preset of 4 Linear Wipe effects on the layer, and an optinal master controler for these 4 effects.
Not the most integrated feature indeed…

  • Hello Max, thanks, yes we could try that I guess but I’m not sure AME would be very happy to have his temporary folder / AE projet moved away while he’s doing it’s thing…
And we would have to set it up for each new AE projet’s folder.
    Regards

  • After searching by myself and searching on the web, the only thing I found was people like us, stuck with these AME temporary sub-folders…
Of course you can set a fixed destination folder of the rendered files (.mp4 for ex) in AME preferences, but not for these AME temporary sub-folders.
    Have a good day and please let me know if you found a solution ;
