What do you mean steep? Its a free upgrade. Do you have a valid dongle and ID? This is all you need to download the update. 4.6 probably won’t run under Tiger. A few folks had some success but most didn’t.

I totally understand that. It isn’t recommended, but most of the time in the real world it generally isn’t an issue. I’ve seen far more problems with several FW drives chained together and these bogging down the system. I have also hung an AJA IoLA or an Avid Mojo off of this FW400 port with a drive connected to the FW800 port. Also no problems.

I’ve had no problem capturing DV and HDV 1080i to an external drive using the internal FW400 for the camera/deck and the internal FW 800 for the external drive. In fact 2 drives are chained. I presume the drives drop to 400, but it has been working without issue. A card is recommended but not always essential. This is on a 1.5 PB with 2GB RAM.

I think you are seeing one clip because FCP sees this as one continuous source with “through” edits. This is in fact what the EDL has told it. Open the sequence as a timeline and make sure you have turned on “through” edits. You should now see cuts.

No, actually I’m saying quite the opposite. MARKS will cause the edit to be places INCORRECTLY. CLEARING marks allows the edit to work properly, but only by using the cursor/playhead position as the correct “in point”. Maybe this changed from 4.5 to 5.0, but that’s how it’s working on my machine.

I tried this today and there are some caveats – at least in 5.02. Timeline marks must be cleared and the cursor must be parked at the start of the first clip. If you have marks or the cursor is parked inside the range, the clips overwrite in the wrong place on the timeline.

The JVC does not generate anything above 720p/30. This is 30 frames and not 60 frames like Varicam. I have been told this is because the encoder JVC has chosen to use will not support 60p. 30p results in more horizontal strobing than 60i – the look of regular video, or 60p. I’m not sure about the proper shutter setting on the JVC, but that may affect motion blur and result in a more fluid look. Check around on the HDV forum for other opinions.
