[Joe Marler] “The BruceX benchmark is about 2x faster than on 10.4.6.”

Good to hear. Makes sense. This update is all about optimization for cores and GPUs. The more cores, the more grunt your GPUs offer, the faster it is.

[Warren Eig] “there is nothing about the Mac Pro I own that isn’t capable of running Catalina”

Not to take away from the validity of continuing to use your tower, but I’m not sure the above comment is completely true.

I have a mid-2009 Mac Pro with a Sapphire card that I was able to bump up to High Sierra. At that same point I also bumped up my mid-2014 MacBook Pro. Theoretically both should have been able to run the same versions of everything at that point. However, when I went to upgrade Pixelmator Pro, the MBP was fine, but the older tower wasn’t because of Metal compatibility issues.

Catalina drops support for a number of core technologies. One of these is Firewire i/o support. All of these things affect what will or won’t work. The bottom line for you is to go to Mojave and stop there. Currently there doesn’t seem to be any app that requires Catalina, yet, nor is improved with Catalina. But it’s still early.

[James Culbertson] “10.4.7 works on Mojave.”

FYI – Apple also released a macOS 10.14.6 supplemental update yesterday, which includes the add’l pro codecs pack. So you should update both if you are going to update FCPX.

    Thanks. Good to know.

[James Culbertson] “Like Adobe applications as one example?”

Actually most of the Adobe CC apps themselves are 64-bit for the most current versions. But the Adobe CC Manager app is still 32-bit, AFAIK.

However, there are plenty of audio plug-ins, utilities, and drivers that are not. So audio mixers and composers are probably in a worse situation than most of the video folks (if they are current). Plus if you use third-party hardware peripherals and adapters, you may or may not have 32/64-bit compatibility issues.

And regarding Catalina. If you run anything other than fully updated current Apple apps, hold off. Avid and Adobe products are currently not yet compatible with Catalina.

[Bill Davis] “Well, we’ve known about the 32-bit code compatibility issues for quite a while. “

In some cases the issue isn’t the app itself, but rather companion installers and uninstallers. It also includes things like user manuals.

Unfortunately there are quite a few useful items that are still 32-bit and it will be unlikely that these are updated anytime soon. For example, Wave Agent and QT7 (EOL as we know).

It may well be that Catalina ends up having the slowest adoption rate of any of the recent macOS versions because of the 32-bit issue.

[Steve Connor] “Perhaps we’ll get a “maintenance” update first”

That will likely be the case because of Catalina anyway.

I’m betting more like December. The FCPX Creative Summit is in early November in Cupertino. In the past, an update has been close to that. They have until the end of the year to release the new Mac Pro and still be within the window of “coming this Fall”. So maybe preview FCPX at the Summit, release a few weeks thereafter, and then release the tower before the end of December.
