I’m coming from Incite on a Digisuite system, using Titlemotion and AFX for effects. On the upside, clip management and timeline editing were great. On the downside, there were no clip database search functions, and there were no options to output the timeline to something other than tape or a dvd recorder. You could create a capture clip and convert it to MPEG1 with TMPEG, but that is cumbersome for long sequences/numerous layers.

I am interested in the Axio hardware and was hoping to transition to it with Premiere on one system and the same editing, software only on a second system. I would still capture SD material from Beta SP, DV and DVCPRO25 tapes via analog component/RS422 from decks.

In HD, I want to work with HDV input via firewire, plus DVCPRO50 and HD via p2 cards, firewire and usb 2.0. I do not plan to purchase an HD deck, as most HD projects will be short form and can be output as files. Consequently, I planned to purchase the SD Axio system. My understanding is that Axio’s HD breakout box is only needed for HD analog component and SDI i/o.

What I would really like is the realtime performance of Axio with an app that’s as easy to use as Incite but offers flexible output and better integration with AFX. Premiere would be the ticket if it has enough of the right stuff.

Using Premiere 2.0 software only, it doesn’t sound like I will be able to use p2, DVCPRO 50 & HD. My only interest in HDV is that I know some clients will be bringing it with them, so I need to be able to support it.

I’ve looked at Canopus Edius and like much of what I see. I think it would be easier to switch from Incite to it. Of course there are lots of details and problems you won’t know about until you actually try to do one of your own projects with it. Support for DVCPRO 50 & HD is extra but at least it’s available.

I haven’t had time to read all the Premiere 2.0 posts, but the mood here seems to be one of disappointment.

Thanks for the info. I am downloading the update now and will try it.

I was a bit amused by your original reply about how Vegas doesn’t work with cine alta video either. Vegas is not professional enough for cine alta but too professional for a consumer digital camera.

Why make digital still cameras that create files that hardly anyone can view or use?

In the meantime, I did find a workaround:

I used a copy of NeroVision Express which readily read these camera files and converted a couple of them to DVD compliant
MPEG2 which imports into Vegas lickety split. Just one problem. Vegas won’t read an MPEG2 file without interleaved
audio BUT it doesn’t like AC3 audio, which Nero produces. Therefore Vegas imports the video and ignores the audio.

    What a bunch of bs!

Anyway, the answer to the problem is to use Nerovision Express 3 to convert the clips to a 640×480 MPEG1 file with
MPEG layer 1 audio. Drag the file into vegas and you have audio and video that actually works.

I will install the Vegas update first to see if I can avoid all the above gymnastics.
