  • I would submit a bug report to Sony, uploading your example file stating the problem.

You really should eventually have the originals since you don’t want to render your final video from the Proxy files.

If you need low bitrate to get the file size down AND you want to do your final render from those same files, I would suggest you transcode the camera original ProRes files to something like the following.

Not knowing you machine performance capabilities.
For easiest editing transcode to 50Mbps XDCAM 422 in an MXF file (or MP4). 35Mbps XDCAM EX 420 is also an option. This is mpeg-2 which edits easily. Mac people will want to put this into a MOV file, which is not that formats native container, and on Windows you will have to purchase a decoder plug-in for quicktime.

Approx 50Mbps AVC/H.264 in MOV. Baseline profile for easiest editing. Or Main/High profile with CABAC turned OFF. This will be 420. You can probably go lower than 50Mbps, especially since you are 24fps.

  • I downloaded your file and I get the same thing. Vegas does not think the file has any video. MediaInfo says the file was re-compressed into the low quality Proxy profile of ProRes. This should not be a problem, it is just the first time I have seen a prores proxy file.

Quicktime media player is able to play the file properly. Vegas appears to have a bug in this regard.

As a test I encoded a ProRes Proxy file on my machine using ffmpeg and Vegas was able to open that file properly.

I forgot to mention that my Quicktime version is 7.7.4.

I have one Blackmagic UHD 24p Prores file I had downloaded. It did not exhibit your problem. Project settings matched source.

I encoded a 30sec 1080p29.97 Prores file with ffmpeg and it did not exhibit your problem. Project settings matched source.

I advanced frame by frame and saw no black frame.

The only thing I can think of that you can check/try, is IF you have auto play turned in the explorer pane, then turn that off.

With that on Vegas will try to start playing a video the instant it is selected, and maybe when you are going to your C drive the first alphabetical file is some kind of video Vegas is having trouble playing.

[Ken Bennett] “My Vegas Pro 13 will not allow me to access my system drive (C:). From the Vegas interface if I attempt to access my C drive, Vegas will crash 100% of the time.”

I have two hard disks. C and D, and I have no problems reading/writing files from either one.

What does “access my (C:) drive” mean?

    What exactly were you doing?

Importing(reading) a file. If so, was it on import or on timeline playback?

    Were you Rendering(writing) a file?

Were you browsing in the explorer window?

[Aleksandar Joksimovic] “But If I convert that AVI to MP4 then problem is gone.
But my video is 1 hour long and plus I might lose on quality so I don’t feel like doing the convert option.”

You can use a program like Avidemux or ffmpeg to remux your AVI video into an MP4 file and use that MP4 in Vegas. The video/audio is just copied to the new container so it is a quick operation.

Vegas will only support AAC or PCM audio (AFAIK) in MP4 files with your AVC/H.264 video. AVidemux and ffmpeg will allow you to copy video and convert audio if necessary.

That should cover all possibilities without knowing the full details on your file(s).

  • What does the free MediaInfo utility say about the file?

You might look into GoPro Cineform Studio premium. Supposedly some have imported the DNG into that and converted it to Cineform RAW.

  • Vegas does not support Cinema DNG files or Magic Lantern RAW files.

I don’t see Sony supporting every RAW format out there. Too much. Hopefully, they will support Cinema DNG as that is multi camera capable.

If you get your RAW exposure setup in some other software and then output an image sequence, you can import an image sequence into Vegas.
