I am experiencing what I believe to be a similar problem. My Vegas 12 will sporadically loose preview audio if I switch windows, ie: Use a web browser or file explorer and when I come back, audio wont play. The master audio meters read and if I render the audio is fine, but preview playback is silent. I can occasionally restore audio by opening Options>Preferences and resetting all settings to default, but this doesn’t always work and I have to restart the program or the computer itself to restore it.

Thank you John. I did download GoPro studio and convert a test file which did work in Vegas 12, but your comment inspired me to dig deeper into the problem. I discovered the problems seems to be in only Vegas 12 and 13. I found a youtube video outlining the replacement of a .dll file with one from Vegas 11 as the fix and it actually worked!

I have Vegas on my SSD and and have tried putting the video files on there, on my 3tb storage drive, even straight from the SD Card (UCH class 3 on USB 3.0 hub/reader). They all perform equally despicably.

John, I have a very similar problem with a new computer I just built with an i7 hex core (5930K) and 16 gigs of DDR4 ram. I do have a GTX 970, but I am using GoPro recorded MP4 videos (1080/60). My preview lags so badly at even the lowest preview settings and lowered to 30 frames it is completely unusable. I have been stalking forums for a week and cant find any solution and am loosing my mind trying to make this work!
