Again, look at my product, Backups For Final Cut Pro at https://npassociatesllc.com/backupsforfcp/ . I’ve kept it up-to-date to support libraries. It is much more flexible than the FCP X backup feature.

The upcoming release, to be posted soon, will add filtering so you can control what libraries to back up as well as backing up across weird file systems.

  • FCP X expects root projects to be in your Movies folder, at least that has been my experience. That is where Backups for FCP expects to find them. Are you moving them to the root level manually?

If you want to tuck your projects away you might want to use Event Manager X to “hide” them. Backups for FCP will back up projects “hidden” by Event Manager X.

If you’d like to discuss this more with me, e-mail support at NP Associates LLC dot com.

Take a look at my white paper at: https://npassociatesllc.com/backupsforfcp/?afunc=docs and my product, Backups for Final Cut Pro, described on the same website.

The white paper discusses how to separate your media from you events so you can easily back them up and keep them organized.

Backups for FCP knows how to backup just the project and event files themselves and possibly your media. It knows to ignore the other stuff like render files. The upcoming version can also ignore Transcoded Media, which is easy to recreate.

One nice feature of the program is that is does incremental backups, unlike disk copy programs, so you can restore to previous date and time. You can restore specific projects or events. You can label your snapshots, so you know why you made them.

My product came out after this thread was created.

  • I too, have an upcoming release of ‘Backups’, which I have just submitted to iTunes.

    • Initial support for Xsan network locations.

    • You may now double-click on a .fcpBackups archive to initiate a restore.

    • You may now control backing up Transcoded Media with an option.

    • Show the shortfall if a backup or restore was abandoned because of insufficient disk space.

Do I web search for “Backup Strategies for Users of Final Cut Pro X” my white paper on the subject, that I posted a few weeks ago. It talks about many of the issues you are experiencing.

If you’d like to talk to me one on one, contact me via the source of the white paper.

  • Actually I have. I wrote the program!

Some of the advantages of it are:

    1) It knows the FCP X file structure so it know what to back up. It only scans your FCP X files, not your whole disk, so it is fast. When Time Machine kicks off, it can be quite bothersome.

    2) It does incremental backups. With Carbon Copy Cloner and other such utilities you can only restore to your last save.

    3) You can do very frequent backups, every few minutes, while you are editing, so if you screw up, you can recover easily. It only copies changed files. You can label backups.

    4) You can select a date and individual project or event to restore.

    4) It only $18 US! Restore once and it has paid for itself many times over. 4 & 1/2 stars! Great support! You’ll like it!
