[Nick McMahon] “3. I’m about to add in some 1080 footage at end of project… should I downscale to 720 when I convert to avi cineform codec in GoPro studio..?”
Using CineForm is a great idea. If GoPro Studio does a better job of resizing then I would use that. This will also make your render go faster because Vegas Pro won’t have to resize.
Ah… so I think I’ve just now realised then that by setting the project properties means that any footage you bring in that doesn’t match will be resized by vegas when rendering to match..?
So what happens when I bring in an SD clip which is 3 seconds worth of this…? (Project properties are set to 720@ 30p)
Is there any way to make this lower res footage look any better..?
Thankfully it’s not on the screen long enough for people to register it’s quality difference but of course I KNOW it’s there… and it bugs me somewhat
cheers

I wish you all the best running the graduate course at NYU… that’s a very honourable posting… congratulations !!
…but my selfish side still hopes you’ll still have a little time left to visit us here with our questions.
I’m also thinking about going back to school… on the other side.
There’s a film school at Oxford which I’m going to enquire about enrolling in a full-time course and hoping they use Sony Vegas. Although, as I’ve discovered, it’s not difficult to learn a principle in a different software editor and translate to Vegas.
Thinking of buying one of these to remove the limitations of the fixed lens Gopro.

Cheers Russ…
I have to say that’s the first I’d ever heard of the Novo… perhaps that is because you can’t actually buy one as far as I can tell from my searching online… you can only rent and for a single day one pays almost the cost of buying a GoPro standard.
However…. try this

I’m seriously thinking of getting one… that pre-modded version is basically double the price of a standard GP hero 4 black but comes with the 7.5mm M12 lens… and of course the freedom to add whatever c-mount lens I like
If I buy the kit and a hero 4 black and mod it myself I can get the whole lot for 484 quid (US$721) and save 150 quid

great post Kirk…. that saves me asking lots of same questions… hope you don’t mind me posting on your thread..?
John… My footage is extreme sports action jumping from aircraft with lots of people movement (obviously) shot with Gopro mainly at 720p 60fps but some at 120fps experimenting for slo-mo quality using the ‘Flux’ which comes with GoPro studio 2.5 (makes for much smoother slow motion although it’s more ideal if the camera is fixed and that is rare as I’m part of the action 99.9% of the time, but it still improves on what it’s like without Flux).
As I’ve been working on my project I’ve been rendering to Sony AVC/MVC .MP4 using the ‘Internet 720’ template and not playing with the settings as I don’t yet fully understand them.
1. This gives me a pretty good end result although I’d like to know if I can improve on the quality..?
2. Have you done a tutorial on customising render template settings and what each setting will change and why you might want to change it..?
3. I’m about to add in some 1080 footage at end of project… should I downscale to 720 when I convert to avi cineform codec in GoPro studio..?
cheers

January 28, 2015 at 1:21 pm in reply to: Using Illustrator vector art logos in credit rollBrilliant… now I won’t find myself posing the question at some point in the future trying to work out why a Jpeg I’m trying to use is not working as I want.
I now have the huge task of trying to gain copyright sync licence for material that is not mine… The video bits should be more straightforward, but the audio copyright can be a minefield as several publishers and record labels can hold copyright to material.
Do you know if I have downloaded video from youtube whether I need permission to re-use what is already there…?
cheers

January 26, 2015 at 5:33 pm in reply to: Using Illustrator vector art logos in credit rollCheers John…
I have illustrator tho it’s a fairly new addition to my toolbox and haven’t yet got around to appreciating it’s real power… too busy learning Vegas… but saving the illustrator vector art as a portable network graphic is simple to do and of course I’m now having a Homer Simpson moment wondering why I didn’t work that out… DOH !!!
One only has to think at the file compatibility level with Vegas and therein lies the answer… however I probably wouldn’t have selected png but rather lent toward a jpg, so thanks for the heads up that png renders faster.
Do you convert all hi-res jpg stills images to png to use in a project….???

It’s coming along nicely…. I’m such a perfectionist tho and I keep thinking I’m done with the intro and then I can’t turn the brain off and constantly come up with ways to improve on it.
Which plug-in would I use to bring each letter of a 3D text extrusion into the frame separately… from different directions off the screen and fly on to build the word…?
The particle array section is done and dusted and looks really good on the timelapse background of the milky way… as I said I think I’d like to create the same intro that solidifies into a 3D version of the text in my next project.
Do you know of a different plug-in for that to work..?
Btw… once this current 2014 team highlights video is complete I’ll send you a link to it on the team Vimeo channel

John…. should I render the sections in AVI…? or does it not pose any issue if it’s rendered in an MP4 container..?
Being highly compressed I know all too well that MP4 is not editor friendly… but is it just as unfriendly if I’m simply stitching sections together and re-rendering…?

January 16, 2015 at 2:05 am in reply to: looking for list of definitions: render settings. *sorry for newbie questionI’m like yourself… been dabbling for a few years and now beginning to take editing seriously and understanding the render templates can be very confusing, but the easiest way to think about it is simply to decide how you want to deliver your project.
If you’re going to youtube it’s worth reading up on how youtube treats your video once it’s uploaded so you can make sure you render your project to a quality that will look it’s best online. Try reading through these and then you may get a better idea of what you need to render your project to and the templates in Vegas should make a little more sense tho I’m sure one of the super users will be able to expand and simplfy far better than me

I didn’t realize that you rendered the FX. You didn’t render it properly. You need to render it with an alpha channel. You’ll need to create a template under QuickTime that uses the Animation codec set to 32-bit so that you get an alpha channel. Then drop that on the track and set the Alpha Channel of the event to Straight (Unmated).

Thanks…. thought there had to be something I’d missed… Job done… 🙂
