I’m not the arbiter of the protocols of the COW, but I believe that you are acting entirely properly. As long as posts are not blatant commercialism they’re usually fine. You are correct to invite inquiry outside of the context of these posts rather than putting up a rate card. I for one will email you. I’ll also be adding sticker to my disks saying that copying them may result in permanent damage to the manhood of the pirate.

Mark is right on the money, as usual. And Aaron is saying the same thing. Suck it up, work through it for a while until she gets the idea that her “supervision” will have a better impact elsewhere.

Here’s one more thing we can add to the list of things I’m not: not a lawyer, not an accountant and now… not an insurance agent. So this is simply a guess and speculation, but here goes.

I believe that YOU have to be the one who sets the value of this asset and that it needs a special rider on your general property and casualty policy, which specifically lists this asset and sets an additional annual fee for covering it. The degree to which you then go to protect it, ie.- fireproof safe, room with an inert gas fire suppression system, will also affect the rate. Should you not have the rider, not have specifically declared these tapes as a valuable asset and something happens you may have a real problem establishing that they are worth much at all.

Then again, what do I know? Ask you insurance agent.

Not sure I understand the strong nature of a couple of the earlier posts, but I have to agree in their basic premise: quit and go after what you can get. Just don’t count too heavily on being able to get much of it.

When I first started out (in the radio production business) and had to take whatever work I could get I dealt with one particularly sleazy agency guy. He could never possibly pay an invoice in under 60 days and usually wouldn’t pay for the last session until he needed to book the next session. Hmmm, yet somehow he always had a new Mercedes.

Work that I would do in the hundreds of dollars he would turn around and bill to his clients in the thousands. How was that possible? One word: hutzpah. This guy was able to act like a big deal to the point where everyone of his clients was convinced he was a big deal.

He continued on his stellar arc for a few years, able to replace me when I grew tired of his BS, which I believe also happened eventually with the majority of his clients. Style can only get one so far before substance is required. Sound similar to your situation?

Do what you can to move on, just try these days to have somewhere to land before you leap. Or at least a few bucks in the bank to bridge the distance between jobs.

We obtain health insurance through an organization called Graphics Arts Benefit Corporation. I believe that this is just for our region because before consolidating with other state’s organizations it was known as Printing Industries of Maryland. No doubt there’s a similar organization you can join in your area.

The long and short of it is that by being part of a large number of member companies we are able to obtain coverage similar to that of a very large single employer. I say similar in that it’s very high quality coverage, just not particularly inexpensive.
