I disagree with Grinner, and that’s unusual. While you need to live by scopes to stay legal you can’t do moderate to high end color grading without a good monitor. Also the software-based scopes which come with NLEs are notoriously un-reliable.
Given your stated budget of 1,500 GBP you are right at the point you need to be to afford the 17″ Flanders Scientific monitor. (Maybe, not sure how much duty / import tax there will be for the UK.) I’ve been the 17″ FSI for two years and been extremely pleased with its accuracy AND its built-in variety of scopes. And FSI has exceptionally responsive customer support, in addition to supporting the COW.

Add to that the pre-built “academy” countdowns. It would be nice to have these basics available in multiple formats.

Two of our clients who send out machinery service people, bill travel time at a reduced hourly rate — reduced but more than half — and charge for this “door-to-door”: in other words from the time they leave their office until they return, plus per diems, plus travel expenses. We don’t go that far. Wish we could, but I live in a different reality.

It’s typical to charge for expenses and half your normal rate for time spent in transit. Here in the states the accepted federal deductable tax rate for auto mileage is 50.5 cents per mile and that’s what we charge clients. We then do not charge for things like gas, but do for highway tolls. Hope this is helpful.

And given how few still photography darkrooms are still in use these days, you can probably EASILY find one on eBay or elsewhere for very little money.

How about doing what Fernando suggests only making the cut to a camera positioned as if it were the mirror? The actor looking straight into the camera washes his/her face, brushes his/her hair and otherwise stares into the camera as if using a mirror sells the scene.

Go the favor route whenever possible. It makes little sense to have someone resenting the fact that you expect $10 for a DVD dub when they may have the potential of throwing a multi-thousand dollars job your way in the future. My exception to this is when instead of a single tiny request there’s a constant stream of tiny requests. That’s when we add them to our timesheets and invoice the cumulative time monthly.
