  • Funny, I go to the gopro forum, EOS forum or the photoshop forum and they are littered with duplicate threads about FCPX for some reason… but to talk about something else other than FCX here is blasphemy. I kid though, it’s probably more of a forum quirk.

Might as well be pasting into a new timeline at that point

Even in FCP7 you can’t change the sequence framerate or field dominance after you start editing, though frame size/pixel aspect ratio & codec can still be changed, these options at least would be nice to make there way to PP as editable after editing though.

I 100% agree with the tower has become more of a niche for people who either make money from them through creative/technical reasons like we do, or for enthusiast reasons like gaming. That doesn’t mean the market is small, it’s just a lot less average consumer oriented and more specific these days. I can count on 0 fingers the last time anyone of my friends/family talked about wanting to buy or actually buying a tower computer in the past 5-6 years. Computers are personal machines to them and not tools, for them a laptop or ipad is more than enough and makes more sense. A laptop/mobile device used to mean compromised speed compared to a tower, which is still technically true. But we’ve passed a crescendo where increased power means nothing to average daily tasks like browsing, multimedia, word processing. When that is what the machine is being used for the speed difference is negligible between a consumer quad/dual core with 4gb ram vs a dual octo core workstation with 32b ram.

  • I know what you mean, if I need to do some more advanced colour correcting I go to after effects, even though I have had access to Color over the years and now Speedgrade, it just seems a little crazy to me and overly complicated for what I need to do… but then again so does node-based compositing and looking at the interface for avid after years of FCP(and now PP). Workflow-wise they seem to be geared more towards film and drama work, which I don’t really do. Interface-wise they seem to be like avid in that they follow a lot of paradigms that have been around since the 90s and not so much modern media & OS interface ideas.

How many months did it take for FCPX to get its first update?

You won’t get any real GPU accelerated mercury playback like you would a nvidia 2000m/3000m. Right now the only AMD OpenCL GPU’s that accelerate the mercury engine are the 6750(1gb) and 6770 in the macbook pro. Premiere will still work with this firepro, but everything will be based off the CPU and performance would be much less than going with a supported Nvida CUDA GPU.

Some formats may require the purchase of 3rd party codecs/software on the PC side. Like if you have footage from the mac side that is HDV codec but in a quicktime container. This is more of a case by case issue and not a general problem but you should do a few tests firsts so you know both machines can read and work with the types of media in your project. MacDrive may be necessary if you are working from a Mac harddrive on your PC.

Someone posted a couple days ago that he developed and sells on ebay a custom mac 8800gt 1gb card that works in the mac pro 1,1 and is the only card that will work in it to accelerate the mercury playback engine. search ebay for mac pro 8800 gt and look for the one that says “enable mercury playback” in the title.

If your system has a mercury playback supported CUDA card you might be better off applying the warp stabilizer in Premiere Pro CS6, as now with CS6 Premiere can accelerate the warp stabilizer with CUDA while in After Effects it can only use the CPU.
