Start from scratch. As has already been mentioned above, when using Sony Sound Forge Noise Reduction, you have to do several passes with only a small % at a time. Thanks to the Sony contributors/users tipping me off about that, I have been doing that for years already. e.g. if you wanted to reduce by 25%, then you need to do 5 x passes of 5% each.

I once did that for an entry into the annual Australian Tropest Film Contest. The last pass had only the slightest trace of the Dalek sound in it, but I could tell. I called in my two young adult kids, both singers and musos and with really fussy and accurate ears. They liked all the passes except the last – they could pick the Dalek.

I sent them all to the project owner. Guess which version of the soundtrack the owner chose?

I’ve used Sony Sound Forge Noise reduction to get rid of background noise from time to time. If you overdo it you will get that ‘metallic’ sound on the voices – I call it robotic or, more nerdy, Dalek. However …..

What about Sony Spectral Layers? Doesn’t that do exactly what you want? Check out some of their video tutorials on Spectral Layers. It will be time-consuming but I think it will do the job.

Thanks for this. Your presentation of Win8 faults with respect to several windows being open at once – but not in Win 8 – is a major aspect. I can’t work unless I can have that. It’s changed my mind. I have had a concern that Win8 will be ‘here to stay’ and that I would be left behind but I will just have to take my chances with that.

There is a free app that returns the Start Menu to Win 8. My son was running Windows 7 for a couple of years and went onto the pre-release Windows 8 quite early and has been on it at least all this year. After many months he finally expressed his serious dismay and frustration at not having the Start Menu. Very patient I would say. I have him a URL for Pokki, which I had read about. You can find it here and it’s free:

    https://www.pokki.com/windows-8-start-menu

He is delighted with it. A different add-on that I read about earlier, removed the Metro interface and gave back the Start Menu/Desktop system but Pokki gives you both simultaneously. You can operate the way you always used to as well as still learn the new interface in case it’s here to stay.

As for me, I need to buy completely new hardware before I install VP12. I will build it myself, specifically for use with VP12, having bought it early at the upgrade discount price. I am expecting to jump straight in with Win 8, being careful that drivers are available for all my bits and pieces.

Having said all that, if Win8 disappoints me, I will not be surprised. One size NEVER fits all.

    Regards,
    Neil
