  • Thanks very much Chris and Norman. Chris, I’m going to try what you’re saying. Right now, I have a weird related situation where the renders from these effects seems to be creating files on my hard drive that keep causing Premiere to crash, I guess because my c-drive is getting too filled up. (These render files from applying the Shadow/Highlight effect are actually shockingly big). So I had to get rid of the render files to get my computer to work, and right now I’m holding off rendering the effects again, plus the additional effects you suggested. Ultimately though, this is a separate issue, and right now, as soon as I figure out this big-render-files-causing-PPro-to-crash thing, I want to focus on the more important issue of fixing this flickering and I will try what you guys have said. But I’d certainly be interested in anyone’s advice if they’ve Encountered Premiere crashing for this reason.

Thanks Kevin, I’ll consider that. I’m so frustrated by what Apple’s done with this non-backwards-compatible thing that I’m almost considering switching, but at this point I’m trying desperately to find a reasonably priced copy of Final Cut Pro 7 that will allow me to easily finish my current FCP 6-created projects. And I just had one last question about that. If anyone’s ever bought or received software this way before, meaning not from the manufacturer, what are the most important things to receive in the transaction? I’m assuming you need at least the product CDs and the serial number? Is that right and is there anything else that’s important?
    Much appreciated,

Yes they’re still selling copies of Snow Leopard for like $30. Thanks again Shane.

Thanks a lot, Shane. So to take your advice here, I guess I should buy Snow Leopard from the Apple store for $30 or whatever and then try installing just Rosetta from those installer disks. And then I may be able to install Final Cut 6 on my new machine? Just let me know if I misunderstood anything, and thanks again.

Thanks to all who have replied to this post. Much appreciated. I guess my biggest question relates to Shane’s response, about not being able to work on any previous FCP projects in the new Final Cut X. Is that right?? I was just at the Apple Store, asking about that very point, and he said he thought that issue had been fixed by the recent update. Is that true? If not, I’m thinking my only real option, since I had a number of unfinished FCP 6 projects in progress, is scrounging around for a copy of FCP 7.

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding anything that was said. And again, my big concern is I have projects I was working on in FCP 6 before it stopped working, and I need to be able to continue working on them in whatever program I get. So it would be great to just be able to download FCP X if that issue was truly fixed by the recent update.

Your advice was dead on, Erik, and I really appreciate your time and expertise once again! I was using my mouse to zoom in and when I stopped that it fixed the problem. I also was placing the map PDF, using the ‘Place’ function in Illustrator, then saving it as an Illustrator file and then bringing it into AE. May I ask one quick follow-up, just to try and understand something here. Does it make any difference whether you use ‘Place’ versus actually going to File-Open then opening the PDF within Illustrator, and then bringing it into AE? I’m not sure if the problem was more caused by my zooming in with the mouse, or the Place versus File-Open thing.
Much appreciated again. I’m going to make an effort to participate more actively in this forum, although my expertise level is way behind most of the folks who seem to participate here.
