  • Problems when I use the ‘Shadow/Highlight’ video effect

    Hi,
So I have a couple of shoots I wish I could do over, where the shots were too dark and, within Premiere Pro 4.0.0, I’m trying to use the ‘Shadow/Highlight’ video effect to improve them. This effect initially seemed to help quite a bit, brightening up the shots so they looked much better. But sadly I’m getting a noticeable flickering on the screen that makes the shots unusable unless I can get rid of this. Has anyone encountered this kind of bad flickering screen when you’ve used the ‘Shadow/Highlight’ effect, and if so do you know how to get rid of it? I played around with the ‘Effect Controls’ settings and I haven’t had any luck. Or, alternatively, does anyone have other suggestions on brightening up dark shots, at least a little, in a way that avoids these kind of side effects? Or in the worst case scenario, must I bite the bullet and try to reshoot these with better lighting?

Any suggestions for fixes or even hard truths would be appreciated!

I agree with Chris. I use Synthetic Aperture for color correction, and it works wonders. But I also use Spyder3Elite so that my monitor is calibrated correctly for color correction.

Thanks very much Chris and Norman. Chris, I’m going to try what you’re saying. Right now, I have a weird related situation where the renders from these effects seems to be creating files on my hard drive that keep causing Premiere to crash, I guess because my c-drive is getting too filled up. (These render files from applying the Shadow/Highlight effect are actually shockingly big). So I had to get rid of the render files to get my computer to work, and right now I’m holding off rendering the effects again, plus the additional effects you suggested. Ultimately though, this is a separate issue, and right now, as soon as I figure out this big-render-files-causing-PPro-to-crash thing, I want to focus on the more important issue of fixing this flickering and I will try what you guys have said. But I’d certainly be interested in anyone’s advice if they’ve Encountered Premiere crashing for this reason.
