I don’t quite get what you are trying to tell us… Expressions use absolute name string based references, there is no way around that. AE 7 will keep track of those and rename references where appropriate (though it sometimes does not work as expected). Your only other simple option is to use references based on layers’ and effects’ indices e.g. comp(“Main”).layer(1).effect(1)(“Slider”) as opposed to comp(“Main”).layer(“X”).effect(“Effect”)(“Slider”). If you are really daring in nature, you can build your setups based on filtering name strings, but the overhead is substantial and not really worth the effort. Apart from all said above, you should simply re-think your workflows. Make use of the “Copy Expression only” function and regualrly save your expressions into animation presets so you can easily re-apply them to layers en masse when required.

No, not really. The bitchy thing about this stuff is that unless the host application supports it, you can’t really work around it – ultimately even plugins rely on internal AE function calls many times which is especially critical on the I/O part. In your specific scenario there is no harm in using your 10 bpc YUV footage in a 16 bpc project, so you should go down that road. I think the only critical point will be when you re-import your compositing stuff in your edit suite and this should really only be a matter of proper import settings.

[linkoping skrills] “mylenium, you might have the solid software and scripting skills, but i thought you were better than jumping into the bullshit i started. you’ve always been super cool.”

No, please, I didn’t intend to come across as offensive, smart-assed or insulting. It just feels like you are a bit hotheaded at times and are not easily satisfied with what answers we can provide you. It’s all just reverse-engineering on our part as well, trying to provide the best solution with the tools we know – in this case AE – but that may not have been involved at all in the creation of those effects. The simple truth of the matter is that the only – perfect – answer can come from the artist who actually did it.

Use 16bpc or 32bpc both in your project seetings and when rendering (if your file format supports it). AE does not natively support common video bitdepths like 10, 12 or 14bpc directly.

Well, nobody is stopping you from using multiple instances of the effect to get your custom formats…

Put them in a sub comp as sequenced layers and use one of the split clip methods. If the number of clips is equal to the number of logos, Particular will use each logo with the same probability.

No, you are not missing anything. AE does not yet provide this functionality.

Now everybody calm down and let’s try this again… The type of effect you are seeing can be acieved by using one of Pete Warden’s plugins (which – lucky for you – are free). Another way to go about this is is to scale a layer, but leave it at draft quality which will AE make simply double the pixels instead of interpolating them. Yeat another technique involves the Minimax effect or as an alternative Obvious FX’ Erodilation. The only real work is to:

    a) find usable edges
    b) make your edge layers 3D and align them
    c) animate the stretching

    To wanggoo:

I understand your points, but you should be glad you haven’t seen some of those extremely cheap and cheesy music videos made here in Germany. I guess you’d prefer to wear very strong sunglasses while viewing them ;o)

    To linkoping skrills:

You should try to phrase your posts more precisely. There is a million looks and techniques and with that vague descriptions you often provide, you are misleading people.

On a personal note I would advise you to focus more on learning techniques rather than copying work of others. Many of your questions could be avoided if you had more in-depth knowledge of AE (and other tools) instead of trying to be a copycat. If you will take what little advise I can give you: Try to be original and put your own ideas and abilities to work.
