    Enabling GPU in Premiere does not make any difference (CS6.02). I have the beefed up MBP with maximum 512 Mb VideoRam.

    Sorry to say, I am not impressed with Premiere Pro. If the application cannot playback a simple stream of H264 on a powerful machine, I would suggest it is not optimized properly for Mac.

    We normally assemble the comp as you have done in After Effects, and then crop the output upon export.
    You could also PreCompose the entire sequence in 8 different 1920×1080 comps, moving it on the X-axis (the required amount of individual pixels) for each comp. The result is the same, but the latter makes it easier to export again after changing something.

    If you have 12273 x 1080 comp that spans across 8 displays, you can calculate the individual pixels by first subtracting 1920 pixels: 12273 – 1920 = 10353. You can now calculate the amount of pixels outside the overlap: 10353 / 7 = 1479. And now we can get the overlap: 1920 – 1479 = 441 pixels.

    You know that the first output starts in pixel “0”, and ends at “1920” – it needs to be cropped 10353 pixels in the right side.

    The second one starts at pixel “1479”, and ends at 1479 + 1920 = “3399”. So if you precompose, simply move the large comp 1479 pixels in the 1920×1080 comp – or if you crop, you will need to crop 1479 pixels in the left side, and 12273 – 3399 = 8874 in the right.

    The third starts at 1479 + 1920 = 3399.

    You have to create a custom sequence in Premiere, but do also consider AfterEffects where you can do a RAM preview, and get an idea of what you are doing.

    In order to display a large video in Watchout, you would need to pre-split the video for each display (this is a job for AfterEffects where you can crop upon output). In other words you create separate video files (preferably MPEG2 with constant Bitrate) including the overlap area, and you can import these in Watchout through the Video Proxy import, where it will then display a seamless video across all displays.

    If your material does nopt need to be all motion graphics, and the background for example is static (or a slowly moving still image), you might consider doing your composition directly in Watchout. It really offers amazing real time rendering, and supports most types of image formats, including Quicktime Animation with Alpha channels (for smaller animations).

    Months ago Aja promised support for X with the ioHD. After a while I asked for a stud, and the reply was that Apple was preventing it to happen…

  • You need to force implement the new systems to see if they fit your need. Practical testing IS required.
    Purchase Premiere CS6 or upgrade to Production Bundle and experiment. I personally have not installed my old favorite Fcp7 on my new MBP and am forcing myself to work with CS6 and FCPX. Even rhough these new programs offer great features – after a year I still miss features from Fcp7…
