I understand your point now. I think everyone agrees this is an improvement, the variable is how big a step someone thinks it is, and that seems to vary with who needed what?

I’m glad this works better for bigger houses. It doesn’t do much for me, but it doesn’t have to. If the price of making this a better collaborative tool for them is me wasting a day updating projects and manually relinking files… I can live with that.

As for performance I’m seeing a mix. Some things are quicker, but certain timeline updates seem slower. I guess everybody’s mileage my vary. As for the new MacPro, yes I’m guessing that’ll be a must. I was planning to get one, but the February thing is a bit disheartening. Hey, maybe I’ll have 10.1 figured out by then…

I feel like a lot of the naysaing is from people who don’t really use it.

To those that do use it, Libraries are a very ‘necessary’ part of the equation, and although relatively minor, the adjustments that have been made to the UI are good adjustments.

Also, FXPlug3, if delivered as promised, sounds like it will be good for developers, which is good for users.

And then there’s the increase in performance.

The Library thing is subjective. You say it’s a good thing… I’m ambivalent on the change.

FXPlug3 is like ObamaCare… nobody knows what it’ll mean until it’s actually here.

Increase in performance? What, with a new MacPro cylinder? I’m not seeing an increase on a current maxed out MacPro. In fact, it’s occasionally a bit more sluggish. Removing the Apple Track Pad seems to have helped a bit (its incompatible), but it’s slower than hell at redrawing waveforms. It wasn’t like that before.

Actually, I did. I pulled the batteries and restarted the machine and they’re back.

Well, that’s a hell of a thing. FCP X 10.1, or possibly 10.9.1 OSX isn’t compatible with an Apple branded Trackpad. Ouch, that’s embarrassing…

The Libraries are fine. I didn’t really hate the other way, but this is probably better in the long run. I got a lot of things back that we had lost from FCP7, so that’s a plus.

Still, after a year, one would like to see some new things added. Adobe isn’t standing still, so I think Apple should probably do more.

Hopefully the new MacPro will make it really fly, so we’ll have that.

Maybe I’m not good at it, or maybe people think they are better at it than they actually are. 🙂 I find FCP X’s rubber banding exceptionally fast and easy. The realtime waveform feedback is a boon too. And you don’t need the pen tool, just Option-click. Also Ctrl +/- to adjust overall clip level. Now if there were a control surface with faders, I might give it a shot. But still it requires you to predict the future.”

Should have tried a Mackie Control Unit in FCP7. It kicked ass! Used the hell out of it… every day!

Yes, after a year, one expects a bit. Your list covers a lot of it.

At first blush, there is a lot to like, but then you realize that a great deal of that is giving you back things that you lost in FCP7… so it’s hard to count those as progress.

For big shops, this looks like a great deal. For the rest of us, I’m a bit underwhelmed if I’m being truly honest… but I’ve only been with it for a awhile today. Perhaps I’ll feel differently later. There does appear to have been some polishing of things.

One has to assume that this was a lot of “under-the-hood” stuff, in preparation for some real upgrades. Hopefully the speed on a new MacPro will be something to look forward to.

To me, this looks like what the first release should have been. I hope Apple some serious additions coming in the very near future… and not a year from now. Right now it feels like a lot of garage cleaning and rearranging and not much in the way of new paint…
