There is no way around Q. You may want to try to turn the situation inside out though. Drop the whole clip to timeline and IO and ripple delete the unwanted parts.

Because color correction is basically the process of increasing contrast in parts of the image that you want to draw attention to. But to have headroom for increasing contrast you need to start with low contrast image with very even tonal distribution. That’s what Arri LogC or Sony S-Log is — an attempt to record evenly distributed shades.

I filed the feature request but it wasn’t about “Merge clips”. It was about copying and pasting back and forth between project and timeline. “Merge Clips” doesn’t belong in the timeline. When you do it in the project tab you have a choice of sync points and the result of the operation depends on this choice. When merging in timeline there is no choice. Link would do the same job just fine. Just let me get linked clips back to the project, to the bin I want them to be.

It is doable. You either record to tape in insert mode or prestripe the tape with several TC starting points on the same tape.

Keep in mind though that a VTR needs preroll and postroll. So make your QT movies with plenty of padding before and after the shots. I’d do 10 sec and add whatever needed to get to a round TC.

Thanks for the link. So merging clips in timeline automatically puts the merged clip into a project. Fine.

How do I select clips to merge without resorting to mouse?

Dual system. Non-matching timecode. Clapper slate.

– copy a shooting day worth of clips to timeline;
– rename from whatever camera generated to Scene-Take;
– park on a frame sticks hit;
– load matching sound take into source;
– hit Replace;
– repeat until there are no more clips;
– select all;
– copy back to project;

Without ever touching the mouse.

Can you select a bunch of clips in the Project tab, Command-C them and then Command-V them onto the timeline? Can you select a bunch of clips in the Timeline, Command-C them and then Command-V them into the Project tab? What if they are linked clips (Video and Audio from different master clips)?

FCP did scrubbing in thumbnails in 1999. No marking though.
