I too have recently experienced this on Win 7. The question is whether it used to happen on XP, and for me the answer is no. So don’t be quite so eager to blame ram and switch to 64 bit, I think there’s more to it.

In my 7 minute video I had to render in 4 sections, after a while it would just crash when I tried to add more clips at 1280×720. Equally, trying to render in any format would just result in a crash.

Luckily the crash info is sent to Sony, so hopefully they should be able to build up a profile of their software’s limitations on win 7.

But certainly the behaviour I witnessed can’t simply be attributed to ram, because I know the same project would run fine on XP with 2gb…

To be honest I’m kinda disappointed with the way it looks on youtube, even with the HD button ticked.

I wonder if I’ve used the wrong settings, though I did the quality and bitrate bumped up high, and the file I uploaded (250mb) looks pretty good. Any tips?

Hooray, just the answers I’m looking for. Thanks to you both. It would be better still if virtualdub would accept the .mov from my canon sx200is cam, apparently they’re h264 or something, I’m not sure why virtualdub won’t, but there we go.

I’m currently making a vid for my local sports club, and really struggling to organise and distil the 200 or so clips I’ve gathered so far. It seems I need to make a lot of subclips to extract the juicy bits from otherwise too long cliips, but find it difficult to keep track of all the files in vegas’s explorer.

i’m no expert, but my impression is that everyone pushes the 920 hard. as far as i can see there’s no point buying the 940 / 960.

anyway, let me see, all my components are cheap, mobo GBYTE EX58-UD4 MOBO. That’s a budget one.

I think it was meant to be at 3.4ghz, but I must’ve ticked the overdrive box which takes some multiplier factor to 21 or something. most of the time it throttles back to 170 x 12.

I’ve never had a crash, and know really very little about overclocking other than copying some voltage numbers off a forum. But it seems to work. I’d strongly recommend this chip, though perhaps more back at the start of the year. Might be worth waiting for the next bunch

I’ll give you one reason – I run my i7 920 (the cheapest one – 2.66ghz) at 3.6ghz. I don’t think anyone runs them any slower than that. If they do they’re wasting their investment.

And that’s minimal overclocking effort, supremely stable, good temps (and it has a much higher temp threshold anyway).

If you’d like to send me something to test render on Vegas 8c pro which is what I’ve got I’d be more than happy.

I gather it has 4 cores, but you see 8 cores in task manager, and it zips along when all 8 are running at full tilt

I hadn’t looked into the sony avc codec, unfort it doesn’t have a template for 1280 x 720, but I am aware how to save one so that’s OK. It seems to use all cores which is good news.

Is the sony avc the fabled h264? I’m using version 8c by the way, downloaded the trial for 9 but couldn’t get past the c++ 2008 redistributable installation which kept hanging for me on windows 7.
