You’re quite right! I started out looking for the PCI card we used, then got distracted by the profusion of Thunderbolt cards and as you say, got myself in a mix up between the old FireWire 400/800 and Thunderbolt 2 & 3.

Apologies everyone that read my reply!!

A few years back, we used a Thunderbolt 400 PCI card in an HP PC and that worked fine with a LaCie thunderbolt drive, so I can’t see why it wouldn’t work with the Promise R6.

I see StarTech do a range of these, including the faster 800 speed versions. https://www.startech.com/en-us/cards-adapters/pex1394b3

I agree with Patrick, CCC has been one of the most solid pieces of software I’ve every owned!

I use it for both regular bootable cloning of my drive and for creating hourly backups of a clients server so that when they accidentally delete a file or worse, a folder, I can go into the Safety copy and restore within minutes.

They also allow downloads of older version for legacy kit going back to 10.4!

  • Jenn,

Your Backup Plus is pre-formatted GUID NTFS, which is primarily designed for a Windows OS setup.
Apple being very aware of the need to fit in with the Windows market, decided some time ago to allow you to read NTFS formatted drives, then more recently to read & write to NTFS volumes.

The problem as you’re seeing here is it’s not 100% Mac formatted and can lead to problems should you need to use the NTFS formatted drive with an older Mac.

Firstly, do NOT reformat your drive as you’ll loose all your data. Instead, consider making an exact clone of your data onto your Mac OS Extended Seagate (Extension) drive, then when your’re 100% happy it’s an exact mirror of your original Seagate Backup Plus, reform the Backup Plus as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)/GUID and clone back to that.

I’ve found Carbon Copy Cloner the best utility for cloning/duplicating although I’m sure their are plenty of other choices out there.

Just came across your post, so thought I’d add my thoughts.

I’ve been using the CalDigit TS3Plus dock for some time now and I think it would do what you ask (along with stuff you may not need) as it’s come with a hefty PSU to power any MacBook and free up some ports by giving you one full speed USB-C (Gen 2 10Gb), one USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 ( 5Gb/s), 5 USB-A 3.1 plus Ethernet, card reader, display port etc.

So I think you could plug your Backup drive into the dock, then your source from the front usb-c or the spare one on your MacBook.

Are you just looking at the permissions on your Mac running Catalina?
As this will show only you have permissions to read/write, with everyone as ‘No Access’, once you send the file to another user, they will also see they have full permissions and can unzip the file.

This applies to both Mac & Win users you give/send the file to.
