OK, I can appreciate that you want to use tools that you’re comfortable with.
You didn’t say if you’re using Pro or Movie Studio so I’m not sure if this technique will work with Movie Studio (I use Pro).
Set Audacity as your preferred audio editor (Options – Preferences – Audio).
Load a project (call it MyProject for ease of use here), right click on an audio event and choose “Open Copy in Audio Editor“.
Make sure to use the Open Copy option (you’ll see why in a moment).
Do your desired editing, save it and go back to Vegas.
You’ll see that the modified audio has been added as a Take over top of your existing audio event and saved to your project as MyProject Take 2.wav
You can switch back and forth from source to new audio by clicking the audio event and pressing the T (for Take) key.
The beauty of using the Copy mode is that your source audio is untouched. -

I’ve been using it since it was introduced and have never bothered to learn to use any other programs.

Like other folks on here, I’ve never used DVDA to do my burning.
I prepare in DVDA and use an outside app (in my case it’s ImgBurn – it’s free) to do my burning. -

My thinking is that I want to use only the track that has program audio on it. The other track, while supposedly empty, may have some unwanted audio on it (e.g. hum) and you don’t want that mixed into your main audio.

I always right-click and choose “left only” or “right only”, thus avoiding any potential problems.

In that case, you definitely want to learn how to use Color Curves as it will help a lot more than the Brightness and Contrast FX,

You have me puzzled as the half screen comment is usually the result of the split screen view icon being enabled.
Hopefully someone else on here has another idea.
