I found the video tutorials at lynda.com very useful. You pay like 25 bucks for full access for a month. There is a Final Cut Pro section with lots of instructional video. You can keep the video up while you duplicate actions on your computer; pausing it when you need to.

I opted for the ProRes 422 compression instead of converting to SD at this stage. Apple touts it as a way to work in HD on standard drives and it’s working great so far with one of my internal drives. 1280×720, HDTV 720p (16:9). For the panning I had to do, I enlarged a piece to 120% to allow for short pan.

I want to do some pans and zooms, so make sense to bring the large uncompressed HD file into a regular dv ntsc timeline(at 16:9) and let FCP 6 reduce it to fit; so I would have some extra size for the panning etc?
