Is your sequence the same dimensions as the video you want to export? If not you are asking media encoder to change the aspect ratio of your video and it might look funny.

Another consideration with age is travel. Taking a red-eye flight at 30 vs 50 is very different. Also waking up at 2am to catch a flight makes for a potentially long work day.

It depends on your vendors and any equipment rentals. I have had situations where things got called off a few days before a shoot and we were already committed to paying freelancers, travel and gear rentals.

In a contract with a customer it is a good idea to list cancellation policies, even if there is no penalty. If it is in writing and they signed it it can’t be a total surprise if it happens.

  • A little different from what you are doing, but I was lucky to have interviewed two of my grandparents while they were still healthy, and edit a few videos about their life experiences. Video is a powerful way to document someone’s life experiences. Doing this for people who know they are going to die must have even more significance and emotion. As others have said, be careful of how much time you expect someone to talk to you in one go. Depending upon their medical conditions you may need to spread things out over hours or days.

Try to have someone who knows the person do the interview and go in with a list of questions and follow up questions. Getting a succinct description of anything can be a challenge.

As for video formats, as time goes forward the availability of analog video playback will become limited. there are companies that still do conversion services – Walmart and Costco come to mind.

    Good luck

Look at Adobe Captivate or the Articulate authoring tools. You make each segment of the video a separate mp4 file and then build the interactivity with authoring software. There is a learning curve but tons of tutorials and freelancers may make it easier. The output is an HTML5 compatible package of files that can be played locally or on a web server or LMS.

  • When editing two cameras, I make a PIP of both side by side, make my cuts, then clean it up. Multi-cam will do this too.

I am somewhat familiar with Six Sigma – a good friend became a “black belt” in his company which manufactures heavy machinery. A lot of the improvement projects sounded like common sense solutions to problems, but the big problems were a mindset of “that’s the way we do it here.” So change management is also people management – working to build a rapport and trust with people who are not inclined to change, and then observe and report on ways to improve. But you need to convince the people that change is in everyone’s best interest.

In media production there may be areas of inefficiency, though it may depend on the scale and scope of work being done. A creative project can be difficult to analyze numerically. For example we used to say 1 minute of video takes 1 hour to edit. but in reality 1 minute of video can be 3 bullet points and narration, or it can be Pixar style animation. Both of these do not take 1 hour to create.

Thus areas of waste might be in measurable processes. Every time I learn a new shortcut in Premiere or Photoshop I realize a potential time savings. For example years ago when I learned about J-K-L and ; and ‘ commands, and that I could do cuts editing without using the mouse my editing time for that type of 1st draft reduced dramatically.

I will try to read the document from mark and report back.

    Happy days.

On a short turnaround project, at the very least get a written contract and send an invoice for whatever the payment terms dictate, and another invoice upon completion if it was split into parts.

The main drawback of getting 100% upon completion is if you need to incur any costs out of pocket. Narrators or freelancers often want to be paid immediately, or certainly faster than you will be paid. you are not a bank, don’t get stuck having to pay your bills while waiting to get paid.

  • There is a new feature in the latest update where you can link data in an Excel file to titles – I have not used this but it might be a way to accomplish what you need to do.

There was a tutorial posted a while back about using inDesign to make static titles and being able to make changes to many easily.

There may be other ways to do this such as duplicating a graphic you like and manually changing the text while keeping the style intact – more tedious of course.

Has anyone requested something like this of Adobe? Lot of shows use consistent graphic styles.
